Even here in New Zealand, we're consistently over 90% renewables, and we're not really trying that hard.

Do we count EEZ encroachments in the Pacific? Only reason why China isn't as militarily adventurous as Russia right now, is because they know they're not ready yet. Not really yellow scare nonsense when China itself (Republic of) is concerned about this.

Largely, but they are finding some traction in some communities around the world. Nothing too much to worry about, but annoying, nevertheless.

Same here in New Zealand, but we lost a Prime Minister due to the concerted efforts of the far-right. Donald Trump would never make it here, but they can chip away at the institutions we built. I'm fine with another ideology clash, we can push them off the map again for another generation or two.

We should just give Americans complimentary abortions if they travel overseas. Pretty sure it wouldn't be too much of a dent to global public healthcare systems.

[Wristwatches] How a $260 plastic watch pissed off the entire watch community

Watch collectors are kind of an odd bunch. I’m talking about “dumb” watches specifically - watches that only tell time and don’t have any sort of smartphone connectivity or biometric tracking. Some of the fancier models might have a timer on them, but you’re certainly not going to be getting text notifications. Watches...

Seagull generally do make good watches for the price. As does Tissel, which is a Korean brand, also within that price range.

Besides that, the standard brands from Seiko and Citizen are also pretty good, and they carry the name. Even Casio is pretty retro and affordable now.

That's just how it is with luxury brands. Either someone just knows all the specifics, from type of leather used, to specific types of metals, from being in the industry or being brought up with it, or someone doesn't care and can just afford it. You could do the same not just with watches, but plates, or wallpaper.

Invade? They could just take their customs booths, move it up north, and by the time the Russians come back, just claim that it's always been there, and if they wanted to do anything about it, they'd have to invade China.

That is substantial... That's with an injet printer, or a ink tank printer? Converted mine roughly runs at £0.18 per ml.

I doubt they'll go down much further, as it is, from humble Toyota hybrids to more expensive Mercedes fully electric vehicles, you're looking at around half a year of waiting if you order one today. Over the pandemic that waitlist was nearly a year's worth.

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

You only really see large price differences like that from higher-end manufacturers. At the lower end of the scale, if you look at Toyota or MG for example, their bargain basement models with nothing on them, are only marginally cheaper than higher-spec models. Take MG for example, the difference here between their cheapest model where I live, is less than $2,500 USD compared to the top spec model. Whereas the difference between a top spec Mercedes EQE and their base model is roughly $40,000 USD.

We shouldn’t be surprised that the reason Toyota has been lagging on getting #EVs to market is because they have been working on a #LeapFrog move.

@TasDave

@Glasnozt @jpm Unlikely though. Toyota recently lost a CEO, a Toyota heir, basically company royalty, complete with apology. Primarily as a result of not capturing the BEV market. This was certainly unplanned.

What are you considering now, just out of curiosity?

Arcturus,

Most of the Tesla owners I know are Chinese. The early adopters were Caucasian, but now that they're mainstream, they're being bought by pretty much everyone.

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

Also quite popular in China. Really it's the most affordable non-Chinese option, outside the US market. Unless you count the Tata Nexo, in which case, the Chinese options would be better...

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

The top selling EV in what's considered a developing economy, China, is a Tesla Model Y. And whilst the USD carries some weight in other economies. Middle-class is middle-class in the US.

Arcturus,

Depends which market you're in. If you're in Australasia or Europe, the value you get from an MG is fantastic. They don't go overboard with making things too complicated. Besides that, the other poster was correct. Hyundai make some really efficient vehicles (as well as Kia). Hyundai has Blulink, which I think is one payment only to have. The Chevy Bolt is quite affordable. There aren't really many EV's which have been designed to be terribly user-repairable, mainly because manufacturers don't trust people to be working with high voltages. For example, Mercedes doesn't even allow you to open the bonnet, not without a special key for the EQE. The windscreen wiper fluid filler cap is placed outside the vehicle.

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

I wouldn't say there are lots of better options out there. There's definitely a lot of options. But there aren't many that I have seen that are better. Those that are, are more expensive. Those that are cheaper and better are Chinese and aren't available in the US market. I know this because we do receive Chinese vehicles here. From memory, top three selling EV brands here are Tesla, and two other Chinese brands. There are some equivalent alternative options, but it might not be for all people either.

The Leaf is pretty much the worst option you can get. There are plenty of others, cheaper, and better, that actually have thermal management on the pack. Unless you're buying used, in which case the Leaf can be fairly good value, if all you're doing is city driving.

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

Oh, you're thinking a Ute or SUV?

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

Would recommend this over the Leaf, but if I recall correctly, Hyundai's latest EV's may not have a manual outdoor door release. You won't get this in US markets, but in Europe and Australasia, I do know the MG is cheaper than both Nissan and Hyundai, and do have manual releases on all their doors.

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

If you're in Europe, Asia, or Australasia, you don't really need to look beyond MG. They're pretty much all you need for the money, on a budget of course. In these markets, the next step up would be from Tesla, and from there, there's quite a few options for luxury electric vehicles.

Arcturus,
Arcturus avatar

I've driven them, they're surprisingly good for the money. BYD is pushing it with their overseas pricing. And Ora, they're not very good at all despite the media hype.
