Why do many microwave ovens hum in an interval of a minor 7th?

Something that I’ve noticed across most of the microwave ovens that I’ve used is that when they hum while cooking food, I can pick out 2 distinct tones. One of them is pretty clearly 60 120 hz, the 2nd harmonic of the AC power frequency. The other is consistently a minor 7th above that (which would be somewhere around...

Yes, microwaves are a poor substitute for an oven but they work fine for vegetables that you might otherwise use a steamer to cook. Stuff like broccoli, beans, carrot pieces etc. Corn on the cob works well too, just give it a few minutes in the microwave with the husk still on.

Probably should take into account people with learning disabilities and processing disorders

As an option, definitely. As a default though I too would prefer the standard spoken form if the time is going to be spoken rather than displayed. It's a bit like how simplified wikipedia is a good idea but I prefer regular English to be the default version.

Is he carrying them around and using them or are they more for collection/display?

For general use I like having a multitool, often having a bit more than just the knife comes in handy. I normally carry a Leatherman Wave+ and consider it a pretty good tool to have, but I suspect that might be a bit over your budget even with exchange rates taken into account. Something like the Leatherman Skeletool might be worth considering though.

Manufacturers don’t make displays under 6 inches available for purchase, with special cases (such as the iPhone Mini) being made under exclusive contracts. The best lead they have so far is to try to use displays designed for the front part of a foldable phone, but they’re yet to strike an agreement....

Similarly putting stuff in the upper right is just asshole design for those of us who are left handed, unfortunately that's relatively common.

If you take the bag right out of the box it tends to be difficult to put back into the box, having seemingly become larger like the rabbit in the OP picture.

Curiosity I guess, it's not like I've done it often.

It's SimCity 2000, and it's making me wonder how fast African Swallow speed would be on a modern computer - I believe that speed was basically progressing time as quickly as the computer could and it was pretty fast even on the 166(?) MHz processor of the Mac I played it on as a kid.

How pervasive surveillance and tracking of people (and their data) is in todays society. We've become accustomed to it but I'd bet people a century ago would be shocked at the idea of stuff like regular people being filmed from multiple angles when just going to the shops, having a device in their pocket constantly recording their location, receiving targeted advertising based on what information they've looked at previously, etc.

Bing gave me this for 'Going off like a frog in a sock'.

Edit: Also this one for 'Flat out like a lizard drinking'.

OP is either worried about ghosts or the serial killer(s) whom he nicked a few bodies from.

There's a Bagdad in Tasmania too, went past it when I was down there a while back (as well as Jericho and the Nile River).

Could potentially be confused with 'The Call Left a Message' though, which is a little different.

I do like the names of a few related ones, like 'The Call Has Bad Reception' and 'Got The Call On Speed Dial'.

The pretty important context to this video is that the boy in question had allegedly just broken into the mayor's house and he was waiting for the police (see here for a news article about the event).

Thanks for the idea, looks like converting them might open up some more options for viewing. I'm only intending to view already created maps rather than creating data so I don't need GIS suite functionality once I get the maps on the phone (really only need geolocation, marker points etc are nice but not necessary), viewing as an OsmAnd layer sounds promising if I could get that to work easily for multiple files.

Can confirm, I found creating a new Microsoft account and doing literally nothing with it for around half an hour is suspicious enough to lock the account and require a phone number.

That's a bit rich coming from the people who call a potato a ground apple.

That seems a bit warm for me, I'm wondering whether the study was done using people in a hot region and therefore acclimatised to higher temperatures. I haven't found the full text of the article to confirm my guess but it does seem likely since it's talking about finding decreases in sleep quality when bedroom temperatures rise from 25° to 30°.

Why argue only about the transmission? Why not have cars with manual ignition?

Because on an enjoyment:effort scale a manual transmission ranks a lot higher than stuff like hand starting, manual ignition timing or manual chokes.

If you dislike machines making your life easier, stop driving all together.

Do you also tell photographers to quit photography if they use manual mode to control their camera, or woodworkers to only use powered tools instead of hand tools? Sometimes having that bit more of a connection to or control over what you're doing is just more engaging or more enjoyable - maybe you don't care about that when driving but there's a lot of people who do.

What do you mean electric motors have no transmissions?

They do though, it's just that most are single speed reduction boxes (unless you've got a Taycan).

Cardinal directions as references instead of left/right are often a better option when describing locations, more people should use them. It's not like it's hard to get an idea of where north is - even if you're a bit challenged on the spatial awareness front basically everyone these days has a phone that will easily tell you this.

Auk,
Auk avatar

Yep - in the northern hemisphere a sundial shadow will move from west to east in a clockwise fashion; in the southern hemisphere it still goes west to east but does so moving anticlockwise.

There are obviously exceptions, hence why I said often instead of always. Think larger scale and/or involving fixed objects and cardinal directions tend to be logical, for example:

  • Install the equipment in the western plant room.

  • Please set up the workstation near the power point on the western wall of the room.

  • Come in via Foo Rd, when you get to the intersection with Bar Rd turn west.

  • My desk is in the south western corner of the office.

  • Walk west along the ridge from the carpark, then once you reach the giant boulder take the northern spur down to the river.
