In all seriousness, no one is talking about this, but this is the one disadvantage of open source software being developed by volunteers, we don't know exactly how the admin accounts were hacked but the XSS stuff is really basic stuff, none of those fields were sanatised at all, and it makes me concerned what else has been missed, obviously the advantage of open source is in time this stuff can get fixed, but this is what happens when loads of people who aren't experts contribute to a site.

In comparison to sites where there is a fully hired developer team the quality of the code is significantly better. I really hope the passwords were hashed on these instances and the hackers didn't get plain text passwords or anything really bad like this.

One thing and credit to Ernest, as I've contributed there he does very thorough code reviews and his quality of code is very good, its why im confident kbin won't be hacked.

I work at the biggest software company in the world.
Sure there is projects with security flaws, but at the company I work, there is zero tolerance to big security flaws in the code, we have many automated checks, as-well as manual checks.

Well I was thinking of adding the bot that allows blind people to visually describe images if they write a certain comment.

Years ago when humans walked around in Tribes, it was super important as a survival tactic for everyone in the group to work together and believe the same things as if there was conflict about beliefs in the group it could jeopardise the groups integrity and risk lifes. This is why humans tend to follow stuff in trends or is seen as socially acceptable by large groups of people.

The reason hatred happens towards LGBTQ+ communities from a small number of people is usually due to the above, the people they hang around with and are in their safety circle have hatred towards these communities and people follow the trend, now why do people in the first place hate these groups?

  1. Fear of social change - Especially true among older people, when they were younger they had a set of beliefs that was inset into them and like the above its ingrained to believe what the majority believe, but as people get older and times change, anything which causes a change in soceity makes them feel like their beliefs are changing and older people tend to stick more to their original beliefs as its served them well, even though it maybe wrong. This turns into very much an "Us vs Them" mentality where likeminded people all oppose another group which differs from their beliefs.
  2. Fear of the unknown - A lot of people simply don't understand something about a group of people as they haven't ever experienced anything the group has and because they don't understand it, in their brains it could mean its a threat to them so they oppose it as a default stance.
  3. Fear that their beliefs will be forced to change - similar to the above, people as they grow old start to feel more vunerable and as stuff changes they fear that groups may want to change what they do or believe in, obviously this is irrational as no one in an LGBTQ group is going to force sexuality onto them, but they fear this. They may fear that they will lose privillges as society changes.

Does anyone have an UFO stories to tell?

Banana, to kbinMeta

Just a really minor UI Change. I'd like the ability for posts on KBin to auto show me the image without me having to click on the little image icon. I am a lazy banana and I don't like to click this button for every post, especially in image based magazines.

  • Excessive grinding or padding in a game just for the sake of it or for microtransaction reasons.
  • Microtransaction and pay-to-win models in full price $70 games...
  • Overuse of Quick time events Press E to dodge etc etc
  • Escort missions when developers want to pad their game out
  • Terrible stealth mechanics when an enemey spots me when im standing still in a bush from the other side of the map

This was basically force the admins of reddit to remove them as mods... going to annoy a lot of people but its not going to magically cease reddits operations.

Banana,
Banana avatar

Reddit literally don't care. They gotta try and become profitable somehow and they will destroy their community to get there if they have too

For everyone new to Lemmy, how are you finding the experience?

I wanted to get a pulse check on how new members are finding the general experience/website. Is it more confusing than Reddit or are you finding the instance system a better way of doing things as it can give you more freedom of where you choose to create an account?...

Banana,
Banana avatar

I like the concept
But it feels very much like its been designed by nerdy developers and has had little to no-input on user friendly design.

The federated idea can work but it needs to be more seemless than this.

  1. Communities with the same name should be merged when viewing it from any instance, so you can see all the posts from these communities, they can be moderated seperatley and for advanced users you should be able to select which communities make up the merged community.
  2. By default you should see all of the merged communities in a central place and be able to subscribe to them easily, at the moment its handled different per instance but you have to seek out these communities to subscribe or follow them.
  3. I strongly believe there should be a centralised log-in system, so you can log into any instance with an account from another instance, this means if your instance goes down your account is centralised and is safe.
Banana,
Banana avatar

I think even better, you should be able to sign into any instance via some type of centralised federated login, though I guess the argument is you can't do that in multiple email clients as email is the most popular federated example.

The good news is the tech works, the interface and user experience can be improved.

As someone who has never played Diablo 4, I am enjoying it.

Banana,
Banana avatar

I don't know you overestimate people, I think if the Fediverse will succeed its gotta be dumbed down a lot more for people and made seemless so it works without them having to think about the various instances as much.

Banana,
Banana avatar

The truth is if you have to explain to users how it works, its not a very user-friendly concept.
