Reddit was awesome. Itโ€™s sad what became of it.
Started in Lemmy but kbin's reputation system woo'd me over!

Edited the title (question)!

Er - I also must ask that what weight measure are you using?
I was looking for kilograms ๐Ÿ˜…

Is many tons more or less than 10?

How many times has Earth orbited the sun? (www.livescience.com)

When youโ€™re standing on Earthโ€™s surface, itโ€™s easy to forget that our planet is hurtling around the sun at more than 67,000 mph (107,800 km/h). And itโ€™s even easier to forget that there are seven other planets also making their way around our home star at similar breakneck speeds, or that all eight have been ceaselessly...

Well...if earth is 4.54 billion years old, then my guess would be...

I think I listened only one podcast.

It's finnish. It's about a woman who decided to be an self-sustaining mother (not to be mixed with single parent) and her thoughts and research between before and after getting the child.

Zero.

I only see one friend who watches television. It's the only moment I watch it too. Well, grandma too, but I don't visit them that often.

I stopped watching TV years ago when I felt that there were too many commercials.

I have had way more positive interactions with people than negative ones.
Even strangers.

I also need people around for my well-being.

I'm not gay and I'm honestly intrigued to hear thoughts behind this gay disappointment.

Is it about the actor faking a thing? Is it about not wanting/being able/feeling stupid to fantasize about the character because the actor isn't gay?

Interesting!

only a real actor who is X in real life should play a role about X

I personally don't mind these kinds of aspects being or missing in an actor's personality/characteristics.
If I don't know what something looks like authentically, acting whatever while acting to be "it" seems good enough for me ๐Ÿ˜ And if someone not being something acts authentically anyway, that's good too!

Exterior resemblance has a bigger impact on me.
An example: It feels a bit weird how Disney's new mermaid movie has a different-colored main actress compared to the animation. I know it's important to bring all kinds of people to the mix but...I kinda got used to what Ariel originally looks like.

I'm starting to see some serious downsides to being able to see who downvotes you.

A few days ago I downvoted someone's comment, and the next day I happened to notice every single comment I've ever made had at least one downvote. All from the person I dared to downvote the ONE time. I straight up asked why they did it, and they seem to think I'm an "obvious" troll account that "apparently just exist to...

I'm okay with someone not agreeing with me. I'm okay with someone downvoting me.
Someone downvoting everything I have and will ever make? Well, there's a magazine I'd love to get more folks in and this behavior could cripple it badly, since I get next-to-no votes in there from others so it's already difficult to get more eyes on it. But other than that I think I get more agreements so I wouldn't care that much.

Therefore I'm happy that there's an upvote and downvote (and a reputation) system.

Alright, I'm gonna "take one for the team" -- what is with the "downvote-happy" users lately?

Title. โ€œlmao internet pointsโ€ and all, but what is the point of participating in a community that sees assumptions and other commonly non-harmful commentaries/posts as โ€œbadโ€ this easily? Do folks in here are really that needy of self-validation, even if it means seeking such from something completely insignificant like...

something completely insignificant like internet points

Nothing has any value until someone gives value to something.
I give value to my reputation points - it's a force that drives me further into coming up with and posting content ๐Ÿ˜ And sometimes I enjoy comparing my points to someone else!
I started fediverse with Lemmy but moved to kbin pretty much because of the reputation system being here.

Don't get me wrong though - I don't care that much about downvoting and I don't let it affect negatively on my behavior. At the end of the day, regarding other people in the Internet has more value to me than Internet points ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Damaskox,

I'd argue that having a negative reputation could affect (some) people's behavior here as well.

The Big Crunch is an interesting theory (if not terrifying).

It would be awesome to see a movie or an animation adaptation (or why not a comic) about the visual effects, starting from stars starting to fall apart and ending up in life falling apart!

I'm glad Kurzgesagt is around.
They have done an awesome job. They have created quality content with nice animations and a soothing narrator voice. The videos are short enough and interesting enough to keep me hooked 'til the end. I can share their videos and quote them about important aspects of life. They even changed my philosophical point of view about life.

I think I have watched every video from them. And that nets them a reward - me taking part in buying stuff from them!

Will forums fix the Internet?

In the opinion portion of Kurzgesagt's most recent video, they suggest that going back to small forums, bulletin boards, etc. will help people deradicalize and become more empathetic. The idea behind this is that, just like real life, forums allow people who disagree on certain things to bond under a shared interest or identity;...

A lot of real-life communities restrict discussions about politics too...

I assume so because those discussions easily lead to fights ๐Ÿค” I think many communities just want the good vibes and not risk dealing with bad behavior or fighting or whatever other negativities these kinds of topics can bring.

but because I think those communities challenge my worldview more

I feel there's a difference between questioning your beliefs or points of views in a constructive way to make you think more and articulate your reasoning behind them, questioning them in a negative feedback without bringing anything positive or "developing" to the discussion, and then just trolling or doing anything just to start fights.

We can talk about it after

Agreed.
I think it's wise to focus on the thing that was agreed on before to be done (first) and if time is left, then go into other matters.

Somehow kbin is more attractive to me than Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Snapchat, Instagram and the like.
Some of those services I never made an account to, and some I used for a few hours before deleting the account.

And at the same time I ignore forums, cos they feel like a less active way for me to have discussions...while now thinking that kbin might seem more of a forum than a social media thing like those I mentioned earlier.

Damaskox,
Damaskox avatar

yes of course people should exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet, but so long as itโ€™s cheap and easy to binge Netflix and eat fast food, hundreds of millions of people will settle into that lifestyle

In some cases you "don't have a choice".
I've heard that Facebook is installed automatically in some smart phones and even set to some extremist site/discussion/forum/whatever as default when the person opens that app in the beginning. If you're not tech-savvy, that may lead to even bigger problems...
And then there's the Chinese government's "game". Act like how they want and you get life-made-easier benefits. Talk trash about the government or do some other actions they don't like and...well...

The people who want to eschew mainstream social media for smaller forums will do that, but most people wonโ€™t and the societal issues will remain unchanged.

Some folks don't know about the other tools. Some are unsure about them. Some folks feel there's not enough activity/lack required/needed content in the smaller tools so why bother going there in the first place.

โ€œYou canโ€™t legislate morality.โ€

If someone who came from a society that didn't have laws started to wreak havoc in "our societies"...
Let's just say that not all moralities benefit some people's or everyone's well-beings. And that's why some actions should be moderated.
