Yeah, close that protocol! Build the walls around our garden higher! No need to wait for them to actually do something worth defederating over, we just don't like them!

This is silly. A major social media network is trying to join the Fediverse and everyone's keen on stopping it. If Meta does something dirty or damaging, sure, defederate them then. But I was kind of hoping that open protocols would flourish, not just end up as another bunch of balkanized forums and Reddit-likes.

Musk denied the report, saying he is subjected to random drug testing by NASA.

But too late, it's been mentioned in a headline so now everyone just believes it. Obviously it's true because it's something bad about Elon Musk.

Or are anti-drug laws bad right now too? I've lost track which is more important to believe bad things about.

Indeed. People keep warning "it's just like XMPP!" And thus revealing that they had no idea what the situation with XMPP was like. Google didn't kill it, it died on its own.

What's actually happening is people start from the position "Meta is bad", then search around until they can find a thing to plug into that as a thing they can say to justify it. Well, maybe Meta is bad, but you're not going to prove it or adequately defend against them if that's your approach to figuring it out. You're just going to Chicken Little yourself.
