I loved r/Geocaching because it was independent of the corporately moderated Geocaching Forums over at geocaching.com. I'm excited to see the community here form around the game where the Earth is our board.
I took over the r/upstate_new_york subreddit a few years ago when its mod team quit. It was great to see the community grow 10x and really gain a culture. I'd love to see that culture recreated here, so Upstaters, welcome!
For now we'll adopt the same definition as the old subreddit: Anything outside of the NYC metro area and Long Island is "Upstate". Upstate can be divided into multiple regions (such as North Country, Capitol District, Southern Tier, etc.)
This comes from a Plattsburgher, so hopefully there won't be too much drama haha.
Voat's problem was that it became VERY political very quickly. Hopefully we won't see that happen again, but I'm sure some of these substitutes will end up that way.
I have a feeling in reality most of them will die out, but enthusiasts (especially tech enthusiasts) will keep one alive, sort of like reddit in the early days.
The Twitter fiasco spooked people. Everyone was already concerned with centralized social media, then Reddit did this and people realized that this is not going to stop.

Reddit expat here. I used RIF since ~2011, making thousands of comments and posts, getting into /r/CenturyClub, and contributing free moderation for years. Really sad to see all that pretty much ending.
Reddit really is past tense now.

I don't want to live in a country where Trump could be held accountable (www.usatoday.com)
Are we really the kind of county that allows 'evidence' to go before a 'grand jury' then lets that grand jury 'vote to indict' a former president?
