Even if, in the best case, they are not caching content and they are just storing the data posted to communities local to the server, there will still be a virtually limitless growth in server storage requirements. I found I had problems initially until I properly sorted out caching. Then I threw a few hundred visitors at it and it's been fine. $10 would be OK for small communities I think, but you're right in that big communities will need big servers.

It seems like it would help further prevent censorship, given how each instance of the Fediverse is run by people who can unilaterally decide what their users see. I'm beginning to feel like federation is but a half-step toward a solution.
