Hi, I'm Shauna! I'm a 37 year old transgender woman from Ontario, Canada. I'm also a Linux enthusiast, and a Web Developer by trade. Huge Star Trek fan, huge Soulsborne fan, and all-around huge nerd.

It's a bit more easily understood if you look at a space-time diagram, but essentially it kind of boils down to the speed of an object through space and the speed of an object through time are related and they must add up to 1. So if you're traveling at 50% the speed of light through space, then you're traveling at 50% the speed through time compared to an object at rest. So if you're traveling at 100% the speed of light through space, you're traveling at 0% through time, or not at all.

I found this channel (Science Asylum) really helpful in explaining things very simply. He uses space-time diagrams in this video to explain how gravity is an emergent property of time and how the two are linked together.

What are some good games for having a "backseat driver?"

Hey everyone! Despite my efforts, my fiancé really doesn’t get into video games much. Mechanical skill limitations frustrate her, and sometimes her attention span for games isn’t high when she could read a book or watch a show, I want to try a new tactic to see if it works: games where she can be a “backseat driver.”...

lol I loved her review of Sekiro where she said something like "as for the soulsborne series, the latest game, Sekiro, is actually IN COLOR!" that's always been my girlfriend's problem with the soulsborne series, they're so dull and depressing to look at. Sekiro looks lush and beautiful while still maintaining that environment of dread.

Scream was incredibly disappointing. I can't believe it made the cut.

The big thing for me is that I never, ever felt gender euphoria when I was living as a man. I never felt proud of my clothes, my body, my appearance, a new haircut, nothing, I also didn't like the way I acted. Even when I was "at my best" I felt awful. I also greatly preferred the aesthetics of women and dreamed of being one. But of course it goes beyond just fashion into personality traits too. If you constantly feel like you're not comfortable in your body and your gender role, and it's been consistently that way, then you're probably trans.

I just finished Control and it's really good! Jesse is a strong female lead and there's no male option like some games.

John B. Goodenough, Nobel laureate who gave the world Li-ion batteries, passes away. (www.thehindubusinessline.com)

John Bannister Goodenough, the American co-inventor of Lithium-ion batteries and a co-winner of 2019 Nobel prize for Chemistry, has passed away. He was just a month short of turning 101. Goodenough also played a significant role in the development of Random Access Memory (RAM) for computers.

What a champ! This guy not only brought lithium ion battery technology to the world, but he was also instrumental in research into solid state batteries which are just hitting the market now and will be as much of a game change as lithium ion batteries were. He wasn't just Goodenough, he was the absolute BEST! This man changed the entire world for the better TWICE!

Restaurant branding is getting weird. We have Femboy Hooters and Goth Ihop. What's next, Hip-hop Waffle House? Damn actually, Hip-hop Ihop is a great idea but the Goths already took it.

My sci-fi unpopular opinion is probably that I don't consider Star Wars to be sci-fi. It shares more with fantasy in that it's more character and story driven and less about philosophy and the way technology changes the human experience which imo is what defines sci-fi.

ShaunaTheDead,
ShaunaTheDead avatar

Yeah, usually sci-fi has a point to make about the human condition or some underlying philosophy that guides all of it, or at least a philosophical idea that guides each episode. I find if you ask yourself to finish the phrase "What would society/humanity look like if we had to access to _______?" if the answer to the blank is clear then it's sci-fi. Some sci-fi goes the opposite route though "What if we did NOT have access to ______?"

From this article that I just saw in this thread, it looks like they made their Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) source code unavailable without a subscription through the Red Hat Customer Portal (which I believe requires payment). Essentially it seems that it has gone proprietary.

I'm not 100% in the know on this situation though, so hopefully someone more informed can provide a better answer.

Why is Trilium so unknown? (github.com)

I mean Trilium is fantastic app, lots of potential but the developer is struggling on his own, maybe it's because it's younger than logseq or maybe because is open source compared to obsidian. I think it's the best note-taking/knowledge-base/second-brain i know it virtually could link everything you posses toghter to create a...

It looks like it's built with Electron which should run natively on mobile. Porting it as a mobile app wouldn't be very difficult.

Edit: Upon further investigation, it actually has a built-in mobile frontend. You'd just have to run an instance on a server and access it from your mobile device.

Yeah, something about that sentiment reminds me of when religious people will say "it's God's will" when people are suffering and dying, but then "it's against God's will" when a woman chooses not to go forward with a pregnancy for whatever reason. Extremely judgemental and entirely insensitive.

I wonder if a few years from now everyone will remember reddit like digg and ebaumsworld. It's certainly not unprecedented for the big guy in this exact category to fall so I'm not sure why spez has such confidence.

I'd recommend: Hades, Dead Cells, The Binding of Isaac, and FTL

There's a good reason that even professional pilots working for airline companies need to submit a complete flight plan even thinking of entering the cockpit and taking off. Can you even imagine the billionaires playing with this toy are actually going to submit flight plans? It's going to be a disaster. The first time a commercial flight is taken down by one of these things, they'll be banned world wide, hopefully BEFORE that happens.

I just had to rebuild my wheel hub and consequently had to respoke the wheel. It's not as hard as it seems, just a bit time consuming if you want to save some money.

ShaunaTheDead,
ShaunaTheDead avatar

All you need is some new spokes, new nipples, and a nipple adjustment tool. The tool really is essential, it's extremely frustrating to do with a normal wrench. As for a stand to true the wheel on, you can invest in that, but you can also just flip the bike upside down and spin the wheel and true it by eye.

It can also be a little hard to get the tire and tube off the rim if you need to replace any of the nipples, but it should be easy enough if you take the air out of the tube, then jam something under the tire and hold it, and use your finger or another tool to run along the loosened tire until it comes out of the rim, then do the same on the other side.

I would be okay if these AI generated images were made available to people who had self identified as a pedophile to their local government body and agreed to be placed on a special list and enter psychiatric treatment. After all, although it's absolutely disgusting, at least with AI generated images no children are being harmed and if it brings these sick people forward to seek treatment and to be identified and monitored to prevent real life abuse, then it could actually save real children from being exploited which is obviously a noble goal.

I just don't envy the poor bastard that has to setup the test data for the AI to generate all that art...

I just started playing Farlight 84 which is a free to play battle royale type game. I love it so far!

ShaunaTheDead,
ShaunaTheDead avatar

It's not really hyper competitive. It seems fairly casual as far as battle royale games go, and there's a deathmatch mode where the stakes are much lower, although you do have to reach level 4 to unlock it.
