Moogly,

am I wrong in thinking that the users are the product and advertisers the customer?

I think there was/is a monetization route through the use of user data (probably why they’re pushing their app so much) as well as using all the data for things like language AI modeling.

But on that last one it seems like the biggest players such as openAI and Microsoft already scraped their site freely. Not sure if they’ve missed a big chunk of that opportunity by now

I have developed the impression, and it’s mostly just my hunch not so much evidence based - spez and co are kind of kicking themselves for being oblivious to the AI training rush and failing to monetize on it. Probably didn’t even realize it was happening until we all did via crazy headlines showing up in news about what AI could do. That kind of thing may lead to kneejerk decisions on api access

Moogly,

Work then I’m gonna take a walk and watch fireworks around town. Then get online and look for firework accident videos, as is tradition

Moogly,

Yeah I figure “experience” is sort of ambiguous and pop science-y, but it’s how I’ve usually had it explained.

That redshift depends on the observer is obvious now that you point it out and profound too since yeah, I suppose they’re not developing across space in the way I imagined.

This makes me wonder about a potential universe with nothing except photons/radiation in it. They’d just.. never change? Even though they could do things like affect spacetime they pass through or interfere with eachother?

Moogly,

I’ve read about this but it kind of loses me since it’s such an abstract model of what’s going on. It treats each dimension as equal but like, time certainly seems distinct from the 3 spatial dimensions too.

I know it’s legit and a proper way of understanding it though just nitpicking since it leaves me with a sense of fuzziness like, maybe a gross oversimplification?

Granted I know it’s only meant to explain what’s happening in a predictable way not actually address the nature of these values which I guess is what I naturally lead into wondering about

Moogly,

If things like proton decay and black hole evaporation wind up all being true there could be a universe of nothing but radiation I think

Moogly,

I suppose it would depend on your humidity indoors and if they get exposed to spores. I’ve never had any problems growing it indoors with just your typical room humidity. I’m pretty mindful in keeping an eye out for rogue mushrooms getting in plants but I don’t think it’s ever been a problem

Moogly,

The leadership is too much for me. Too many right wing shitbirds with conspiracy delusions, too much open partying with Ghislaine(sp?) Maxwell, and too many mishandled scandals relating to sexual content with minors.

Huffman (Spez) gave some interview where he talks about civilization falling and he’d “be a slaver rather than a slave” (paraphrasing, I don’t have the interview open) which is just wild because he’s scrawny as fuck.

There’s always rumors of an IPO but I feel like the current staff isn’t fit to head a public company and would crumble under wide public scrutiny like on the markets

Moogly,

It’d be a preferable situation if it were either/or but even then I realize I’m probably not big and bad enough to strong arm myself into that position everyone else would rather have.

Spez is/was a doomsday prepper though I think he figures he’s got an edge over everyone else

Moogly,

Traffic quality plays a big role too. If you never click on or engage with any ads your visits aren’t worth much anyway. You could even vpn yourself from a poor country and be considered even less valuable to the ad machines lol

Moogly,

I think just downvote? It seems to register as a “reduce” which I think is the opposite effect of boost?

Moogly,

If you don’t mind graphics I’d just do the golden age, the psx gen games. So like ff7-9 and Tactics.

These are imo the highest quality games in the franchise and Tactics is the most well written and themed game in the whole franchise too.

The remasters of 7-9 on current gen consoles (probably on pc too?) have a speed up button so you can get through the slow parts much faster. It’s really helpful and I wish all of them had it

Moogly,

I don’t have huge amounts of spare time, probably one hour at a time a few times a week

Damn I don’t think I’d even bother with that kind of schedule, honestly. I’ve played most of them and I can’t think of any that I think I could’ve ‘properly enjoyed’ on that kind of schedule. Even the older games will take tens of hours and you’ll occasionally need to keep things in mind for later in the game (places to go check out, storyline bits, where tf to go next). I’ve restarted before because I couldn’t remember where to go next >.>

And these games are solid overall but they can have extended lulls and you’ll end up spending entire gaming sessions in boring parts lol

Moogly,

Definitely a sparse lot since they’ve spent generations admonishing education.

Moogly, (edited )

Conservative simply means to preserve the status quos at large in society. It doesn’t have anything to do with limited government as it’s nothing more than a convenient selling point. You can see it in their policy pretty clearly I think.

The people I know that support very limited government tend to support the idea of radical changes from the current trends. Ironically I would say by now to support a limited and small government you’d have to support some radical departure from the norm

So like libertarians are kinda radical in some of their positions but they consider themselves more conservative than republicans. Who’s the actual conservatives here? I think I’d say neither really fit the bill but then, who is conservative? Tbh I don’t know anyone that’s like “this is pretty good let’s just stay course”

Which imo makes us have to ask why is this happening? Is this obfuscation of political positions in our language a deliberate thing? Because that’s some shit that’s happened historically with fascism so idk

Moogly,

Gotta feel like these rare folks are screaming into the void lol. The majority of the people who would most likely align with them have admonished such vocabulary as elitist long ago. I kinda love to see it

Moogly,

You… know it's possible to be a conservative without being a Republican, right?

Well yeah, I’d even say Republican policy is at contradictory with current popular conservative rhetoric. I think we’ve muddied these terms up too much in the us.

To any conservative though I think my most simple question is, what is it specifically they want to conserve? They don’t have small and limited government, and we never have? What about the status quo is so appealing if we can all admit there are major problems? It’s like even “conservatives” are saying significant changes need to be made and that’s just convoluted lol. I think “Republican” is so unpopular of a label among the youth that they have to hide behind other labels like “conservative” and “libertarian” even when it makes no sense

Moogly,

Either way, you can't have an intelectual discussion within the framework of two party political system and most Americans can't get over this hurdle.

I think you can when you reduce the parties to progressivism and conservativism. Aka change vs do not change. But in the us we have conservatives claiming that label while crying for systemic changes at the same time.

So I think we can have a discussion in this framework but first we have to un-muddy what labels we assign to which ideologies and we categorize people appropriately. But these people can’t even categorize themselves so it’s a real mess. The current sides as they’re commonly laid out don’t seem like the actual sides in real life imo

And honestly I think the most straight forward way to frame it right now is authoritarian vs not on many social issues

Moogly,

Oh man, it’s like it’s all around you, huh? Almost like it’s everywhere you look except for carefully curated right wing safe spaces. I wonder why?

Moogly,

The most honest answer you’ll get is from some fucked up tweaker that is too gone to hide their unabashed racism and hate of people they share a community with and see every day. “I hate those __” is as clear as it can ever get and I think it’s consistent

Moogly,

Add in a constant effort to trap you in a “gotcha” moment (typically built on some weird binary logic) that they think is the end all of the discussion and it’s so spot on

Moogly,

I’d like to hear how anyone reconciles Republican policy with actually being conservative. They seem like they’re at odds to me and Republican policy is often radical and extreme

Its been one day without Reddit

& I’m doing pretty good! The wefwef app has done a great job of recreating the Apollo experience and has made it a lot easier to not want to go and download the Reddit app. The more active it gets here, the easier it’ll be. How are you guys doing so far? Have you found an App for Lemmy that you prefer the most yet?

Moogly,

Yeah I figure I’ll give it time, but probably gonna test out some other alternatives in the meantime too and just see what sticks.

I got my parents (age 60s) onto Reddit, it was a bit of a challenge but they figured it out for the sake of using it for their niche hobbies. I’ve met people that use it but never the power user type, always people that use it really casually, like just a couple subreddits. Part of what made it bearable was the third party apps too ofc. It always felt convoluted but this is even worse to me. Just figuring out how to respond to your notification was a challenge lol. I had to ultimate go to your profile, your recent posts, and then reply from there. The link to the main topic just goes to the top and this chat is buried

Skill Up - Here's why I'm very keen for Remnant II (Hands-on impressions) (www.youtube.com)

Remnant II certainly is more Remnant, but it's by no means resting on its laurels. There are some big changes coming to core elements of the experience - from class design to visuals to procedural generation and more. Based on my hands-on time with it, all the new stuff is paying off - big time....

Moogly,

It’s the only of its kind as far as I’m aware and tbh, I had a lot of frustrations with various design choices they made.. but with nothing else like it I enjoyed it and will buy this one too lol. I don’t expect them to change their approach on a few things but I can tolerate it just for the sake of a souls shooter

But it’s a shame because I didn’t really enjoy too many of the boss fights. Ironic since that’s usually a big draw for these games

Mixed feelings about giving money to houseless people

So, to get this out of the way, I'm a cisgender white man from a well-off family in a fairly affluent town. I'm making this post because I want to hear perspectives from those who are different from and likely significantly more knowledgeable than me. (Literally as I was writing this post, I came to the epiphany that I should...

Moogly,

I give a lot tbh I’d say like ~10-20% my income a month. But that’s not all straight cash I will also buy people food, clothes, stuff their kids need, etc. but I do give people money a lot and I know it’s going to cigs/drugs. I don’t care what they spend it on.

I’m not giving them money for any specific reason I come up with, I’m giving them money so they have agency. The same freedom I have by having some extra cash, to do just whatever I feel I need to with; that’s all I actually want to extend to them. I think that personal agency is worth a lot and I don’t judge we all get our breaks in different ways.

I used to be an addict and was homeless for a long time. I spent a while at a rehab clinic and it was all free because of community volunteer and donation efforts. I appreciated that a lot and have been big on community shit ever since. Donating and volunteering and all that since I think it does make a difference on a small scale. And occasionally some bigger things you can do can straight up enable someone to change their life for the better
