On #lemmy the first page is usually set on "local" and to see the federated content you have to switch to "all".
On #kbin it's (often?) the opposite. To switch to local content, select "Federation status: OFF" in the sidebar (federation icon, near the settings one).
#kbin tip: if you have "Show top bar" selected in the sidebar settings and you are reading a thread you opened quickly without knowing the magazine/community you were in, the name appears as the first one after the dot, in bold.
