Penguin Random House and bestselling authors sue Iowa over school book-banning law (www.nbcnews.com)

The nation’s largest publisher and several bestselling authors, including novelists John Green and Jodi Picoult, are part of a lawsuit filed Thursday challenging Iowa’s new law that bans public school libraries and classrooms from having practically any book that depicts sexual activity....

Thjoth,

Good. I don't know how these book bands haven't gotten them sued before.

Thjoth,

He's a narcissist surrounded by yes-men, he might genuinely believe that his decisions didn't burn his $44B investment to ashes because as far as he's concerned, that would be impossible.

Thjoth,

I didn't know about any of these, but terminal ads by itself would be enough to make me switch to something else. So would the affiliate links. Why would they think that's a good idea? Well, aside from money, obviously.

Thjoth,

Cult of the Lamb was and still is massively controversial among evangelicals and other extremely religious/Christian people since it's so blasphemous. The falling number of Christians in the US combined with the echo chamber effect on the Internet just (ironically) means all the religious rage doesn't leak out and permeate all of society like it used to.

Thjoth,

Maybe letting EA's greediest and least competent CEO run your company for nine years is bad for the company's overall health, who knew?

Thjoth,

I think the issue with this is that peer reviewers at academic journals are just regular researchers at regular institutions who are volunteers/voluntold to review things. They don't do forensic examinations of the raw datasets that come across their desk because they're not getting paid to review in the first place, and forensic data examination is a specialized skill anyway. So if the bullshit engines known as LLMs are just convincing enough and can generate supporting data that's just good enough to pass a peer reviewer's smell test, that's going to be a big problem for the whole publishing process worldwide.

I would say that academic journals are going to have to hire data scientists to verify that datasets are genuine before they're sent to reviewers, but that would require them actually spending money to do any work instead of just doing nothing while extorting researchers for billions of dollars in free money, so that's never going to happen.

Video: Orcas attack Dutch team in Ocean Race; No injuries (nltimes.nl)

Three orcas attacked the Dutch sailing team JAJO during a leg of the Ocean Race on Thursday. The team managed to film the killer whales banging their heads against the rudders of their sailing yacht. Luckily, the damage was limited, and the sailors and orcas all escaped the incident unharmed.

Thjoth,

That's just one of the antipeople commenting, don't mind them.

Thjoth,

I'm pretty sure it's just wishful thinking at this point.

[Archeology] The sword is so well preserved "that it almost still shines," German experts rave about the spectacular piece. (beehaw.org)

Archaeologists in Bavaria made a rare find last week: during excavations in the Swabian town of Nördlingen, experts discovered a bronze sword that is more than 3,000 years old, the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments announced Wednesday. This is so well preserved, "that it almost still shines"....

Thjoth,

Anoxic environment, roughly PH neutral soil, stable temperature/humidity/moisture levels, minimal site disturbance, and the bronze forming a thin protective oxide layer without it progressing into full blown corrosion.

Thjoth,

My path to Linux was similar to yours, except I dealt with Windows 11 for about 6 months before I finally formatted it and replaced it with Pop!_OS in a 1am rage after it completely fucked up for the 87th time that day.

I was shocked to discover that it was even easier to deal with than Windows 11. The last time I used Linux was a decade ago and it was nowhere near as plug-and-play as it is now. Games worked seamlessly. It completely blew me away.

Thjoth,

You gotta give it to us in refrigerators or we're not gonna know what you're talking about.

Thjoth,

Thankfully, they only seem to be interested in stealing rudders so far. I don't think they're particularly interested in the people on the boat, just the boats themselves, especially their rudders. They've sunk a couple boats completely and even when people have ended up in the water with them or in liferafts nearby they've just finished stealing the rudder and disappeared.

Maybe somewhere near Gibraltar, there's an undersea cave full of trophy rudders.

Thjoth,

I've had about half a dozen reddit accounts over the last 13 years and I've been active posting guides, obscure technical fixes, and other high effort content on all of them. I just retire accounts every 2-4 years because I don't want to accidentally reveal too much personally identifiable information, so rather than delete all the content people find helpful, I just make a new account to compartmentalize things a bit.

I think I'm going to log back into 13 years worth of accounts over the next couple days and delete all that helpful stuff so that reddit doesn't benefit from it anymore. It isn't a lot by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not nothing, either.

I figured it'd be worth posting this here. It's the playlist for the CW Ninja program, which uses the Farnsworth method of learning CW and is the best free CW resource available. (www.youtube.com)

Florida woman who fatally shot a Black neighbor admitted hurling racial slurs at victim's children in the past, affidavit says | CNN (www.cnn.com)

A Florida woman who fatally shot a Black neighbor during a dispute over kids playing outside admitted hurling racial slurs at the children and told detectives the victim threatened to kill her, according to an arrest affidavit.

Thjoth,

There's also a reason most of the really awful stuff comes from religious rather than secular communities. Not only do religious communities often thrive on the type of repression you're talking about - usually ratcheted up to truly insane levels - opposition to the existence of LGBTQ+ people has become a central pillar of the Christian identity in a lot of places, especially in the American/Evangelical space. It's an aspect I don't think gets talked about enough, in that if LGBTQ+ people were to vanish tomorrow, many of these religious sects would just fragment and fall apart immediately. Gays are the external "enemy" and the glue that's holding them together. It's especially true of Evangelicals.

As a teenager/high school student in the mid 2000s, I was a full bore, "god hates f-gs," white-shirt-and-black-tie Bible thumper. I lost my religion in 2008. As my religious indoctrination failed, I went from thinking about LGBTQ+ people every single day to never thinking about them at all. Literally in the span of a month, the amount of my headspace that the gay community occupied went from substantial to zero. That's how hard a lot of religious communities were (and still are) leaning on generating hatred for the gays to prop up their entire religious organization.

That's not to say that the religious indoctrination issues were completely without permanent effects. I've basically never been able to form normal human romantic relationships because of it and that deep-seated repression is still there. Fast forward to the last two years and I've come to the realization that I'm considerably less straight than I thought I was - whoops! - but that never even factored in before.

bonkerfield, to random

I've modified my sailboat trailer to connect our tag-along/tow-behind kids trailer.

It connects much more easily than the old hitch and isn't damaging my rear rack anymore. It's honestly amazing that we happened to have a bike trailer that we weren't using anymore that fit almost perfectly into the trailer frame.
