Anglican Church sacked Headmaster over compensation to child sexual abuse victims (archive.md)

I’m not usually one to share links, but my old school’s Headmaster (Dr Paul Browning at St Paul’s School) is in a little bit of trouble with the Anglican church for compensating child sexual abuse victims from incidents in the 80s/90s. As he started in 2008, those victims technically weren’t his problem but he refunded...

@SteveTech tells you what the church's priorities really are :(

@Mountaineer How much would it cost the state or federal government to buy it and power it up? Chickenfeed.

@AnxiousGnome I admit to being shocked at him claiming the government has reacted with glee. They just have not. Anything but.

He just has no bottom at all :(

Call out post for a particular karma farmer on kbin.social

@pollodiabolo - this user is a karma whore of epic proportions and they have made a shit load (10-15+) accounts on kbin that boost and upvote each other while sometimes mass downvoting others that have posts trending towards the top - all to farm karma....

@Metaright "The way to sway a pro-lifer, then, is to demonstrate that a fetus doesn't have personhood."

No, first you have to persuade them that the life of the fetus bearer is worth something more than being an incubator.

Which you will never do.

People who are anti-abortion fanatics may or may not believe that a fetus is a baaaaaby, really. But what they really do not believe in is the personhood of the placenta owner.

And until you find a way to convince them that a real, living, breathing human being with feelings and rights who already exists independently has rights, including that to life unburdened by an unwanted pregnancy for any reason, you won't convince them of anything else.

@ObM I like them and post them. What would be nice though if if you could post it in the body of a new article with a bit of context about the value/interest, rather than just post it as a link. How you do it is up to you though :)

OPINION: BRISBANE – THE CITY THAT’S ALSO A FOREST.

"But if (as these overpaid Olympics planners and marketing ‘experts’ are insisting) Brisbane ‘needs’ to develop a straightforward, easily-summarised narrative about what makes us special and different from a thousand other cities around the world, we should start by recognising that we are already Australia’s greenest...

California girl gets license to own a unicorn (www.cbsnews.com)

California has granted a little girl a first-of-its-kind license to own a unicorn, provided the 7-year-old can find one. She had to agree to provide nourishment like watermelon, exposure to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows, and polish its horn with a soft cloth. David Begnaud has more.

Plan for Gabba tower cites affordable housing ... but doesn’t include any (www.brisbanetimes.com.au)

“Due to the prominent inner-city location of the site, the provision of affordable dwellings within the building is not considered appropriate. Units within the development will, however, be an aspirational purchase decision for many who will use the purchase to elevate themselves up the property ladder,” Saunders Havill...

@Zagorath " the provision of affordable dwellings within the building is not considered appropriate"

Not considered appropriate by whom? (I mean, I can guess)

" Units within the development will, however, be an aspirational purchase decision"

Wow that is some bullshit :(

Biden is ready to fete India's leader, looking past Modi's human rights record and ties to Russia (apnews.com)

President Joe Biden is honoring Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi with a state visit this week. Biden is extending the high honor even though Modi’s government has stayed on the sidelines in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and as human rights activists express alarm about the state of India’s democracy. The Biden...

@SeeStars It's called coalition building and soft diplomacy. Biden is a master of it. The last thing you want is to alienate a powerful nation like India or China and drive them further towards Russia. Trump never understood that because he's an idiot.

Unfortunately soft diplomacy means shaking hands with some horrible people :(

@Suedeltica I pretty much only follow family and a few friends, and some organisations I want news from. Not a huge number. But Facebook can't even deliver me all those posts in time order, and I'm missing out lots of personal news I wanted to hear, like friends being engaged! If a 'social network' can't even do that basic function, it's useless. I keep getting prompted to follow more people, when I can't even get the updates from the people I already follow.
