fiat_lux,

I'd love to see them fried up and served, they look great! I appreciate the novel presentation, I wonder how well it holds up.

fiat_lux,

Is there something about the word "porn" that actually communicates "really pretty pictures of something but without any human creations" beyond its Reddit meme usage? Because it doesn't for most people.

Also, not all community rules and objectives need to be in the name and URL. The word "porn" in URLs is problematic for users sitting behind state or corporate internet connection though. Be kind to your local network administrators!

This may seem kind of stupid but I am kind of stupid, is there a list somewhere of phrases that are stupid or insensitive racially or gender biased?

I just got up from conversation with a couple of older black men, that I said “well I got to go back to work and start cracking the whip.” And it occurred to me then that it was probably a really insensitive stupid thing to say....

fiat_lux,

To add to this:

List of lists of pejorative terms for people

It includes lists for men, women, lgbt+, disability, age, ethnicity, religion, location. The severity of the terms is varying and arguably location-dependent.

For example, while I (probably) wouldn't use the word "wanker" in a formal professional large meeting in my current workplace without it being somehow contextual, almost no Australian or New Zealander in that company would blink an eye if I said it casually at lunch. But when I worked in the education sector I used the personal rule "if I don't want it written on my gravestone, I shouldn't say it", because teachers have subsonic and lightning-fast swearing detection reflexes, even when they're not at school.

fiat_lux,

To be frank with you, humans are the weakest security point in any system. Even if you did somehow (impossibly) 100% secure your device... you’re literally sending everything to X other family members who don't care about security anyway and take zero preventative measures. That's sort of the point of a chat app. All they would need to do is target your family instead of you to get the exact same info - this is how Facebook has everyone's telephone number and profile photo, even if they don't have an account. And if it's a WhatsApp data breach... well. Your family is just one in a sea of millions of potentially better/easier targets.

If there's anything interesting about your family chats that is actually secret info, it probably shouldn't be put into text anywhere except maybe a password manager. Just tell them not to send passwords or illegal stuff or security question info via whatsapp. It's all you can realistically do in situations like this.

We literally cannot keep all information private from everyone all the time, you have to pick and choose your battles. And even then, you'll still lose some, even if you're perfect.

fiat_lux,

I wish I slept as well as this looks.

fiat_lux,

I laughed and then felt sad. You're entirely right!

André 3000 Surpasses Tool For Longest [song length] Hot 100 Hit Of All Time (www.stereogum.com)

André 3000 has surpassed Tool for the longest Hot 100 hit of all time. As Billboard reports, his track “I Swear, I Really Wanted To Make A ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally The Way The Wind Blew Me This Time” charted at #90 on the Hot 100 this week — it’s the first song on his new instrumental album New Blue Sun. It...

fiat_lux,

Onion tube is an instance of invidious. It's an alternate frontend for YouTube, and as such isn't a federation thing. My limited understanding is that it just queries youtube via API, but I've not delved into the source code to confirm that.

fiat_lux,

Fair, I can definitely see it in that context. When I'm in the mood for an hour long atmospheric meandering background noise journey, I find the Shenzhou album by Biosphere a good bet, amongst others of his work. (I seem to have a thing for Arctic Circle rural desolate ambient soundscapes?) It's repetitive enough to be unobtrusive, but I don't feel like I'm listening as much to modern elevator music like I did with the other track.
