phosphorik,

why is every other post beans tonight

phosphorik,

i expected nothing and have still been let down

phosphorik,

Traditional captchas have been easier for computers than humans for a while. I imagine these “pick all matching” captchas aren’t far behind.

phosphorik,

And the communities in the list aren’t clickable. Pretty low hanging fruit for reducing friction. (Like, the platform should automatically link them, not that OP should have.)

Are lots of websites really going downhill and/or closing or does it just seem like it to me?

Like many people I'm here because of reddit going to shit. Twitter has increasingly been shit. gycat is shutting down in September. To me it seems like lots of bastions of social media are crumpling, but as a previous active reddit user, I've been personally effected. Is this just a frequency illusion or has something changed...

phosphorik,

uh. i’ve always read it “giffycat” but the other way might be the gold standard.

phosphorik,

The United States Air Force has brought down the Elven balloon

The EU reached a new record low in electricity from fossil fuels in the first half of 2023. (energy-charts.info) (energy-charts.info)

According to the data gathered on energy-charts.info, the first half of 2023 saw the lowest production of electricity by fossil fuels since 2015. With 387 TWh (31.7% of load) from conventional sources it surpassed the previous low for a first half year of 400.9 TWh (32.1%) in 2020 by nearly 14 TWh or 3.5%....

phosphorik,

Seriously. You can’t make an omelette without splitting a few atoms, at least for now. Especially since at the moment it’s fairly straightforward to look at our carbon emissions and figure out that if we don’t switch to nuclear our ecology won’t last long enough for disposal of nuclear waste to be the thing that kills us.

phosphorik,

And Macron blames video games. Crikey, this shit again?

phosphorik,

Yo I loved EGM back in the N64 era and I’m pretty sure that was Ziff Davis. Then again maybe I was lobotomized with a magazine.

Reddit is going to remove mods of private communities unless they reopen — ‘This is a courtesy notice to let you know that you will lose moderator status in the community by end of week.’ (www.theverge.com)

Reddit has informed moderators of communities that are still private in protest that they will lose their mod status by the end of the week. Thousands of communities went dark earlier this month to push back on the company’s planned API pricing changes.

phosphorik,

Man, Octopath Traveler was such a letdown. The total lack of character interactions with other character’s stories made protagonist selection feel pointless and the story felt even more shallow than it was. Just… so meh. I couldn’t talk myself into picking up the second one.

phosphorik,

Well, they moved it through 3500 meters of water in the process of retrieving it. That’s gonna be the equivalent of a full wash cycle, albeit in seawater.

phosphorik,

The hell? That wasn’t 2015, that was just like a year or two ago.

…Right?

phosphorik, to 196

sometimes i mistake suffering for personal value.

phosphorik,

i’ve tried and failed to get into futurama for decades. it doesn’t work for me but I’m really happy for y’all.

phosphorik,

Alright so I have a question and can’t figure out a better place to post it than this comment thread.

Kbin is neat and I’ve enjoyed it a reasonable amount for the past week or so. But 80% of my feed is either news and discussion about how bad Reddit is (I know, guys!), memes about about Reddit, and depressing climate change articles that make me panic about things I can’t change. How do I filter stuff like this out of my feed on Fediverse communities?

Thanks.

phosphorik,

Ahh, this is helpful. I looked at my kbin settings page and there isn’t an option to hide magazines, so I thought the feature might not exist. Thanks!

phosphorik,

Classic Japan. I’d say “don’t ever change”, but, er.

What's the better choice, hosting images locally or using imgur to host your images for you?

I believe there are pros and cons for both. Imgur is great because you truly don’t have to think about disk space or bandwidth. Imgur is not great because they can delete your posts at any time without warning and leave holes on the interenet, especially if we’re talking 5, 10 , 20 years from now....

phosphorik,

Most people do not have the knowledge, financial security, and attention span to self host anything for five years. Even fewer have all three, and if you self-host, holes in the internet still appear when you die.

Imgur sucks, but self-hosting is not a good solution to the problem.

phosphorik,

this is fantastic. i think it might be the best Russian Civil War joke I’ve seen.
