soroka, to books in What are you reading this week? [6/18/23]

Haven’t tried them yet, so I gotta put ‘em on the list! Thanks for the recommendation.

soroka, to news in YouTube removes video of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Jordan Peterson for vaccine misinformation

Maybe I’m just not that online, but I think people believe all sorts of dumb things anyway. I think that for people that can be reasonable at all, which isn’t everyone, indifference is a harsher condemnation of dumb ideas than trying to hide them. I sought out the comments in question only after hearing they were banned.

I think this will just strengthen the hardcase conspiracists, and whatever platforms choose to continue to have him. I'm not sure that this really accomplishes anything, and may even be counter-productive.

I'm in the middle of yet another reread of Glen Cook's Black Company series, just finished the 2nd one. Decided to take a break from the series with something I don't normally read - mysteries. Reading Agatha Christie's first Poirot novel and having a great time.

I loved it! Haven't seen many people talk about it outside of whatever initial recommendation list I had heard it from. I really enjoyed the mix of hard sci-fi and socio-political commentary. Really reminiscent of Heinlein's best in that aspect, from what I recall.

I definitely recommend reading the whole series. Agreed that some passages are slow or just obscure due to the style, but I found it quite enriching. I think this is one of these where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, though.

soroka, to formula1 in Verstappen won race with dead bird in brake duct

Catching game yourself is a weird way to save on catering costs.

soroka, to formula1 in Verstappen and GP frosty radio comms.

I do get that feeling from hearing Max's interviews - he does love racing, but has a rather professional demeanor much of the time. And a lot of the other drivers are like him in that regard, at least from what I can tell. (Well, maybe except Kimi late in his career, when it was just a hobby.)

Maybe that's just the kind of dad Max responds to. We don't hear all the radio messages where GP threatens to leave him at a gas station

soroka, to formula1 in 2023 Canadian Grand Prix Closing Thread

Yeah, absolutely. I'm remembering a wet race last year where he went all but one lap on the same tires. Makes me root for him.

soroka, to Metal in I'd love a community vibe check. What is everybody into? Subgenres/Bands/Favorite albums... let's talk about what we like.

Been listening a lot during work, which lends itself to a bit less aggression. Voivod and Mastodon are my go-tos recently, and on walks I’ve been liking Hoth.

soroka, to gaming in What has everyone been playing lately?

I’ll have to check it out! Maybe not right away to not get burned out. I love From’s DLC, and actually wanna replay Ringed City sometime.

Finished Elden Ring today after bouncing off pretty hard upon initial release. Enjoyed it overall, but its specific type of open-world content delivery is just not my cup of tea, I think. Also, felt that it dragged in the last third.
