LibreOffice is preinstalled in Pop OS, and as someone who loves the idea of FOSS I want to use it, but inevitably I just use Google docs or Office Online. Is it really worth learning? Has anyone successfully incorporated it into your workflow?
Seems like a good portion of the activity in the communities is reddit oriented. If the goal is leaving/hurting reddit, it seems we should be continuing on like it doesn't exist, instead of continuing to drive interest to the site. Thoughts?
The majority of people on federated message boards (lemmy, beehaw, kbin, etc) are former Reddit users who migrated specifically because of actions by Reddit, so it is natural to talk a bit more about Reddit at least for a short while. I believe this happened for quite a while on Mastodon (Twitter) as well.
It's kinda fun to watch a dumpster fire in action ngl and I don't think this will pass until Reddit finally figures something out themselves...
And as a PSA: YouTube might or might not be secretly cracking down on 3rd party clients. There have been issues with Invidious & yt-dlp and I have had a few instances where NewPipe on Android bugged out. Let's see where this leads to
I've seen a lot of people who quite dislike Manjaro, and I'm not really sure why. I'm myself am not a Manjaro user, but I did use it for quite a while and enjoyed my experienced, as it felt almost ready out of the box. I'm not here to judge, just wanted to hear the opinion of the community on the matter. Thanks!
Thankfully the Manjaro team didn't seem to have a major mess-up recently, but they did have some very troubled past. Especially now that Arch has a real installer that bundles entire DEs for you, the premise of using an "Arch Linux but easy to use" OS seems less and less
To each their own though! Nothing wrong with using Manjaro at all if someone really likes it
I play mostly Indie so I couldn't speak for stuff like anti-cheat/graphics but... the types of game I play, for the most part "it just works".
If you're into RPG maker games, they sometimes require workarounds (hint: you can hot-swap the contents of RPG Maker MV/MX/MZ into Linux's native nwjs...)
I think the only games that struggle on my computer are mostly because of GPU (I'm on a laptop) rather than anything else Tbh
There was a post about how beehaw was defederating from shitjustworks and lemmy.world about 6 hours ago. Are we involved in that, as are we a subset of lemmyworld?...
"Are we involved in that, as are we a subset of lemmyworld?"
No, since kbin.social and lemmy.world are not only two separate instances, but two different Fediverse applications (kbin / lemmy)... so yeah we're fine for now.
"but any content I engage with is effectively visible"
I self-host a small Calckey instance and previously self-hosted a Mastodon instance, and something I noticed is that different instances don't always federate well... So remote messages won't always show up.
E.g. say I follow Eugen from mastodon.social so I see his posts. For example there are four replies: one from a guy I follow on infosec.exchange, one from a fresh new account on mstdn.social, one from a tiny one-person instance, and one from a suspicious instance that was quickly suspended. I can (most likely) only see the first reply from my instance because the latter three won't federate with my instance... so yeah that's completely normal.
"How does this affect us?"
As background knowledge: (some) people are awful. In practice this means that any large, open-registration social media WILL attract difficult people. To solve this, select at least one: 1) close open registration, 2) limit the size of the instance, or 3) be ready to put a lot, a LOT more effort into moderation.
Many for-profit social media, as well as some large Mastodon instances, have to stay open-registration for various reasons, so they have to find large numbers of moderators to do the thankless jobs of filtering out terrible stuff. This doesn't always work smoothly. Pretty sure lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works were defederated because of this reason: open registration, and mods couldn't handle the bad people.
Pretty sure kbin.social is still open-registration at the moment? I mean kbin isn't as popular as the previous two so I assume we are safe now, but unfortunately ernest will have to make the tough decision one day. Jerry from fedia.io probably already knows what to do since he already manages infosec.exchange, one of the larger Mastodon instances lol.
Haven't seen them on lemmy/kbin yet but... it's quite an established issue on the Fediverse. There are literal Nazis and far-right people on corners of fedi. @oliphant and a whole bunch of people have put invaluable effort to create several tiers of instance block lists because of precisely this reason.
I'm not familiar enough with lemmy/kbin to know how instance blocks work on here so... we'll see!
Pretty much set to get my PhD early next year and will finally make an actual income (instead of what they pay PhD students...) so I guess that's something to look forward to?
I've not been posting on my main account on Reddit for a while since I started using Mastodon & got on the Fediverse. Probably will delete teh account sometime tomorrow.
However, I do have some immigration-related issues which I try to ask using a throwaway account, and the only immigration-related support groups I am aware of are all Reddit subreddits. In fact I believe /r/IWantOut never did the blackout because there are ppl fleeing war zones on that sub.
So... yeah, I'll keep using Reddit until my personal situation is resolved. But I have no intention of using Reddit as my main social media anytime soon, we have good enough memes and cat pics here on lemmy/kbin anyways
I'm a long-term Reddit lurker who is new to kbin & don't know what to post, so here is a photo of Mew sitting on my laptop looking gorgeous. Have a nice day
Does anyone actually use LibreOffice?

TIL gerrymandering is named after the 1812 MA governor Elbridge Gerry, whose name is pronounced with a hard "G", disapproved of the district redrawing, and wasn't the first person to redraw districts for political gain
The "Gerrymander"
should we be discussing reddit less?

How big is gaming in linux?
Are there hardcore gamers there or is it mostly for coders?
Are we 'Shadowbanned' from beehaw?

Describe a game in 5 words or less, and see if anyone can guess it.
I'll go first. Deranged Spiderman with guns
Have encountered racism, hate speech or homophobia on the fediverse yet?
If so, do you consistently report it and get the feeling that it gets dealt with? Of course there are instances dedicated solely to being human trash
What is something you are looking forward to in the next year?
Something positive going on in your life? Share it here!
A lot subreddits end their blackout tomorrow. Will you go back to Reddit, or continue with kbin and the Fediverse?
I haven't used Reddit at all since the blackout began. Even if they change course, the Fediverse is growing on me, and I think I'll stay here....
