If you are an #Apple enthusiast and are a #Reddit refuge trying out #Lemmy or #Kbin, I moderate quite a few Apple communities over on #LemmyWorld. Come join in on the convos!

Pls BOOST for maximum exposure to the #Fediverse 🙏🏼

corysell,

@kylewritescode

Have you all considered just simply creating your own instance? It might cost money (a few bucks a month), but it would give people a more centralized location of viewing these communities. Those who purely browse those communities solely would also then have a home instance.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Lemmy.world, I just think the Apple footprint is large enough that it could benefit from its own home!

@corysell Are you meaning a Lemmy server for AllThingsTech?

We thought about it we are still trying to get our Mastodon server off the ground and sitting up a Lemmy would just spread us too thin.

Lemmy works though by letting anyone with an account see other servers communities and subscribe as long as they aren’t defederated.

corysell,

@kylewritescode

You could do that as well. I understand how works. I just mean these specific communities really would benefit from taking advantage of the decentralized nature of the Fediverse. Everyone keeps building communities on the same 3-4 instances and those instances are struggling to keep up with performance and moderation. Someone should work to focus the entire community on their own “Apple content” instance.

Just food for thought!

@corysell Ah gotcha.

dranger,

@kylewritescode hey thanks! I tried to make an account on lemmy world a bit ago but i got now confirmation. Im going to try again.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dranger You received no email? Have you checked junk/spam folder?

dranger,

@kylewritescode i think that was the issue. I tried to sign up without an email to keep it all private.

swiftdevjournal,

@kylewritescode I saw you moderate an Xcode community. Do you know of any other Lemmy communities that discuss iOS/Mac app development?

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@swiftdevjournal There is programming.dev instance that has different communities for programming.

If there is any that you’d like and we can get a good community going, I’m down for creating it.

We also have https://lemmy.world/c/iosprogramming but it’s not modded by me.

swiftdevjournal,

@kylewritescode Thanks for the link to the iOS programming group.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@swiftdevjournal Yeah no problem. It’s not very active right now it appears.

dhepworth,

@kylewritescode Trying to connect to another instance’s community is so frustrating for me when using Lemmy (and Mastodon). It’s annoying having to replace the original instance name and then append it to the end and hoping that the whole process will work.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dhepworth Are you using a Lemmy account? You should just be able to subscribe to the community from Lemmy.

I guess I am not following you.

dhepworth,

@kylewritescode I am on Beehaw and its search capabilities seem limited.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dhepworth You can go to my profile page here: https://lemmy.world/u/kylewritescode and then it will link you to all the communities I moderate. From there you can sub to them.

dhepworth,

@kylewritescode Thanks. In order for me to subscribe to them I will still have to do the URL edit shenanigans. Maybe I’ll just make multiple accounts to get around having to do all that.

I know that people are not looking forward to Meta getting involved with the Fediverse, but I hope their talented developers can get involved in making cross-instance interoperability intuitive.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dhepworth Do you have a Lemmy account on a server?

dhepworth,

@kylewritescode Yes, I have an account on Beehaw.org, a Lemmy instance, but searching is fairly busted on it for me. I have very limited success in searching for instances outside of those with which it has federated. https://beehaw.org/instances

My profile: https://beehaw.org/u/DHPersonal

dhepworth,

@kylewritescode Oh, I see why I’m having so much trouble: Beehaw has blocked/defederated from Lemmy.world.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dhepworth Without going into too much detail, they defederated from us without notice. We had been in talks with them about some other stuff and them just bam.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dhepworth To be honest, I would definitely recommend getting off of beehaw.

dhepworth,

@kylewritescode I think the answer to my problems might be making multiple accounts to manage the various instances that block each other. I’ve been testing out the iOS Lemmy app called and it has multi-account support.

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dhepworth I have been using Mlem also. Have a ways to go though. Come over to Lemmy.world. 😉

kylewritescode,
@kylewritescode@allthingstech.social avatar

@dhepworth Oh crap. Yeah, they did. 😢 We are still in discussions with them but not sure when it will get resolved.

cliffwade,
@cliffwade@allthingstech.social avatar

@kylewritescode Whew, that just looks like a TON of work. LOL
