Growing up, we used to put green beans through strings and then hang them up to dry.

After dried, they would go into pillowcases and stored so we could have green beans and ham over the winter. We called them shuck(y) beans.

Over my lifetime, I don't know how many beans I strung. Over a mile in length, I would guess.

We're growing beans this year. First in a long time. I need to practice my stringing. 😂

Sorry about edits, fixed alt-text.

@paul I presume you're in America (your bio doesn't say). How did you deal with the dried beans in winter? Just throw them into the pot, whole? Or did you pod them?

@sister_ratched

Whole.

We would soak them overnight then put them in the pot with fatback for a couple hours, slow simmering bubbling boil.

@sister_ratched

You are very much welcome.

SHAMELESS PLUG😂 ---> If you are interested in following my gardening project, which I am sure at some point will have a video of me threading the beans, be sure to follow my account @3SistersEnglishGarden

After years of not putting out a garden due to my , we dive back in this year.

Have not seen green beans like that in decades. Sure, there are green beans in the can but not with the dry vegetables at the store.

Strange. Wonder why?

I've never thought about that before. I don't think I have ever seen them.

Sure, canned shucky beans, already cooked, but not dried.

2/ Doing the green bean math:

5280 feet in a mile. 25 green beans per strung foot = 132,000 green beans needed.

40 green beans in a pound
30 to 60 pounds of green beans to a bushel. I'll go 40, so 1600 beans per bushel.

That would be around 82 bushels.

I usually did around 3 bushels per year for at least 15 years.

15 x 3= 45 bushels.

So, I strung over a half-mile of green beans in my lifetime.

Jason844,

@paul Yes, but what is the weight of the adult Eurasian tree sparrow?

@Jason844

I don't know. I never took a garden hook and threaded them up with string to dry out for winter eating. 😂

@paul
Yes! Leather britches beans! My grandma taught me to do this as well

SparkleTea,

@paul
Thanks!
I’m this many years old when I found out why they were called string beans…!

@SparkleTea
This is one possibility. Another is, the sting you pop off and remove.

You have string beans and snap beans.
