Ruth_Mottram,

Nice piece, it's a difficult balance for scientists we are supposed to write impersonally, but does language we employ blunt message?

@rewildingmag - "Our words have a power that many of us are not yet using. They can paint the natural world as sensing, singing, worthy of life; and they can remind us that we are animals within it, grateful recipients of its gifts, who can offer something in return."

@Ruth_Mottram @rewildingmag I’ve stopped writing impersonally in my papers. It’s not necessary, and the old papers didn’t do that either (case in point: Heisenberg’s paper is surprisingly readable!). Seems like somewhere along the line, someone came up with that “rule” and made scientists believe it, but it distances us from normal people unnecessarily.

@doc @Ruth_Mottram @rewildingmag very good point!
I tend to use a mix of both. Present the setup and data in the passive voice and the discussion in the active voice as the interpretation is a lot more related to the question we had set to answer and the ideas we have around a topic.
(I also know that how we preserve data is subjective, but we do our best so that it's not too much so)
