Candelestine,

As a former bartender, this is a terrible idea. You do not want your kids involved in bar culture until they are old enough to have at least some clue how to determine how savvy the people around them actually are. Otherwise you’re a lot more likely to end up with an addiction problem, as there’s a whole shitload of drugs in that environment.

21+ for bartenders, 18+ for barbacks. If anything they should be higher, not lower, but those numbers are probably fine. By 21 you’ve usually gotten fucked over a couple times by random people and become a little more discerning.

I was a line cook in college. The absolutely mind blowing amount of drugs and booze both the front of house and back of house staff had at their personal disposal was unbelievable.

Teenagers getting introduced to heroin and developing an addiction isn’t a bug, it’s a feature. How can they grow up and see the bigger picture if their mind is dominated by drugs? How can they organise when they are too busy spending every waking moment acquiring more drugs?

Candelestine,

Eh, I’d be surprised if any grand plan is at work. Humans just aren’t that able to cooperate with each other, to make something like that function smoothly.

It’s much more likely an emergent phenomenon from a wide array of different factors, starting with our basic human nature.

Never wise to suspect malice when simple stupidity or laziness could be the reason. They’re vastly more common.

Sanctus,

In this complex society I have quickly come to assume the opposite. Never attribute to stupidity what could be attributed to malice. They want the kids working to keep the labor cheap sense the people they donate to are fighting immigration.

ryathal,

Pretty sure this is mostly hyperbole. It’s more about allowing a 16 year to drop off a beer at a table, than letting them be alone behind a bar for last call.

YoBuckStopsHere,
@YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world avatar

More likely having 12 year old girls serve pedos in bars in the Midwest and South.

bane_killgrind,

if it's 12 I bet your choice of nut there will be a bar called "daddy day care" within 5 years.

PenguinJuice,

This obviously can't be real

Hextic,

Yo what if I wanted a drink during school hours? This is bullshit. Don’t let your kids work jobs or better yet don’t have kids to feed to the corpo grinder. Procreation is goddamn cruel.

andrewta,

I disagree about not working jobs. I started working when I was 12. No not joking. There is nothing wrong with having them take a job with a neighbor and pulling some weeds or something simple, so they can earn their own cash and understand what it takes to earn a dollar.

I disagree with minors working in a bar. I also disagree with states that are expanding the working hours for kids. But I believe it is good for kids to understand what it takes to earn money. But we should be careful on how many hours they work.

When did the US turn on it's kids?

*Republicans

The corpos have minimaxed all they can from the adults.

BurnTheRight,

Conservatives have finally figured out a way to stock their favorite bars with underage girls. No wonder they are so motivated on this. Legalizing child-rape is one of their only policy positions.

xuxebiko,

Let me guess, Republican states?

The US has guns. Why aren’t ye doing something about this?

fearout,

Those are emotional support guns though

Anomandaris,
Anomandaris avatar

Because most of the people with guns are the ones saying "those darn millenials need to learn how to do a hard day's work!" ignoring the fact that millenials are like 30 years old now.

FlyingSquid,

You want us to… shoot the kids?

borkcorkedforks,

What do guns existing have to do with kids or younger adults working as a bartender?

FartsWithAnAccent,
@FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world avatar

They’re more fun than bartending, so just take your kids to the range instead! Who knows? Maybe one day they’ll make a little extra on the side as a range master or even start a career as a gunsmith. Make sure there’s good ventilation though, lead exposure is no bueno.

borkcorkedforks,

I mean there are jobs related to firearms but the industry isn't as profitable or big as some people seem to think. Not unless the customers are governments anyway.

I'm not sure if a bar or even normal teen jobs would even be safer than a gun range. I haven't seen people lose their shit at the range but I have seen problems at bars, retail, and fast food places. It seems to have gotten worse too.

FartsWithAnAccent,
@FartsWithAnAccent@lemmy.world avatar

Both would be safer than being a delivery driver, but I suspect being a bar tender is more dangerous than being a gunsmith despite being around firearms more frequently. I could be wrong though.

conditional_soup,

Yes, we’ve had the meme about eastern Europeans when westerners advocate for communism. Now we need a meme about Americans when Europeans advocate for deregulated capitalism, because I feel that every time I, an American, see the English advocating for a more American style health system.

Phanatik,

Your Republicans are the equivalent of our Tories. After 13 years, the last 4 of which have been a disaster. It'll be a miracle if they win the next election. Judging from the by-elections, Labour is winning in Tory strongholds. The Tories would love to gut the NHS and privatise because that's what they think will bolster the economy. That's really all they care about. Unfortunately, people really like the NHS and the most savvy people understand that it's the way it is today because it's been horribly underfunded.

BurnTheRight,

Conservatism is a global plague of oppression, deception and death. It always has been. Nothing good in history has come from conservatism. Nothing at all.

manitcor,

I’m told by super-smart econ people that companies and states pushing to start child labor up again rather than pay wages that would have adults work is NOT an indication of a failing system.
