A LOT of Apple Folk are telling on themselves over this Beeper Mini situation. It was never about functionality, communication, or security. Those folks just liked having a club they could exclude people from. It's not a great look.
The Green Bubble has always been about bullying and exclusion to benefit Apple's bottom line.
@Indians well maybe not Google and RCS? Google won't want EU regulator scrutiny over their influence on RCS. Genuinely I'd love to see that become a fallback for ALL messaging apps.
Apple tho, iMessage is proprietary, and I'll be shocked if we don't see some attempt to block this or sue.
@zav_ I'd keep an eye on it, and see how Apple tries to break it it or if they sue.
If it sticks around for a bit, this will be a great way to play with other phones, and keep your iMessage chats consistent 👍
@SomeGadgetGuy yeah, I want this as well. My group of friends use Instagram messaging cause it's convenient for sharing memes and funny stuff on IG. But a lot of flack I get is they don't want to setup another messaging service to then for it to fail. I think there have been too many in the past. But WhatsApp has been a round forever now
@darrenmorin
Well that is a PART of the concern. When I see that folks under the age of 20 are picking up Apple gear like 90%, I'm PRETTY sure it's not based on the merits of the technology. The ramifications of this kind of pettiness are kinda brutal to the whole phone industry here in North America.
@SomeGadgetGuy I don't think it's any of that. I mean certainly some but not most. I think people (users) just can't be bothered to use anything other than what comes pre-installed on their devices.
For Apple it is certainly about control and their ever-present walled garden.
@AudraTran
I didn't say "most" or "all" in my first post.
It's the ugliest part of the creation of iMessage. Apple engineers originally looked at how to make it a messaging service others could use, and Apple's executive said no. They didn't want families to be able to buy less expensive Androids for their kids.
From that move on, the entire strategy of green bubbles has been to call attention to the "others" in your chats, and make the experience in chat worse FOR APPLE'S CUSTOMERS, so they would in turn be frustrated with the Android users.
The usage of iMessage over a 3rd party app is definitely apathy, but the blue bubble tribalism is real. https://somegadgetguy.com/2023/03/14/when-iphone-parents-bully-android-parents/
