Anyone shopping a laptop today LOL?
Asus, Acer, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all dropping laptops.
I think I want to go with an Asus or a Surface laptop. I don't think I'm going to go Surface Pro.
Starting prices on X Elite coming in around $1299. X Plus around $999.

Literally the LEAST exciting part of this is talking up all the AI stuff. Instead, Windows Laptops are about to get a LOT more powerful while using a LOT less battery.

Now I just need to see what company is using which "flavor" of Qualcomm chip before I pull the trigger on one...

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

Blergh. Now we're got to figure out which "flavor" of X Elite chip is going to each laptop manufacturer.
Even more annoying that Microsoft is again naming their chip something different.

Other manufacturers will have X Elites called:
X1E-84-100
X1E-80-100
X1E-78-100

Microsoft will have the X Elite "C12". This is so dumb.

How much we wanna bet MS is using the lowest end chip in one of the most expensive Windows 11 laptops built around this chip?

@pak0st I think the Thinkpads will probably be first in line for folks getting Linux installed.

Talking to Marie in the kitchen and we hear a strange rustling on our back patio. She opens the curtain, and is greeted by a young owl full wing spread knocking over stuff we had stacked back there. I got a couple shots through the dirty sliding door and screen. DAMN nature. You freaky!

I tried cleaning up the Owl profile pic with a little editing. Considering this was shot at dusk, through a dirty sliding door, and a filthy screen, I'm really impressed with what the OnePlus 12 telephoto camera was able to do!

OnePlus 12 WiFi Mystery! Why is my phone connecting to an Network?

https://somegadgetguy.com/b/45G

CONTROVERSY! It's a little concerning. My phone keeps trying to connect to a mystery network, listed as an ISP WiFi that (to my knowledge) doesn't do business here in California. Has anyone else seen something like this? What's going on?

@DdaProphet It's a creepy one for sure. Just got a reply from OP PR, and hopefully some engineers will comment next week.

OP PR says they'll loop in an engineer next week.

Maybe a ChromeOS tablet, and you install a Linux distro?

I'm REALLY hoping that in a year, we'll have some good ARM powered tablets with support for Linux. We just gotta get through the Windows on ARM push this fall.

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@shaedrich No no. Not use Chrome. Install linux on it instead.

Wireless charging sucks!
(Sucks more power that is.)
My buddy Ricky and I did a one-off experiment comparing wireless charging to FAST cabled charging. You can watch part one here https://somegadgetguy.com/b/442

I was pleasantly surprised that Qi charging had improved and kept case temperatures better in check, but we still saw elevated temperatures for roughly two hours on a full charge.

Now, iFixit delivers even more data on wireless charging, and it's not great. You're trading a lot of waste and heat for some mediocre "convenience"...

(ht @lupus_blackfur for the heads up!)

@MIfoodie @lupus_blackfur
If you can get a phone with REAL fast charging, it's so worth it. Minutes on a charge immediately equals hours of run time. It's amazing.

SomeGadgetGuy,
@SomeGadgetGuy@techhub.social avatar

@MartinBe in tech influencer land, there's been this push for the "convenience" of wireless charging, but that seems like it's all been built on phones that charge slow over a cable. "It's basically the same".
Apple and Samsung perpetuate this battery anxiety where the phones charge so slow, you need to be topping them off every time you set them down.
That means more accessory sales, and Qi pads are more expensive than USB cables.
