MKBHD talking about the fediverse. This is a big deal, I am surprised I hadn't seen anymore mention this until now. This is like John Oliver or Oprah talking about the fediverse in terms of the reach he has.

That was insightful TBH.
They know very little about fediverse and clearly haven't thought about it much.

EG, it took them a while to get to realising that interconnectivity doesn't mean distinct platforms, settings and apps don't exist.

This was when they argued that distinct places/platforms are actually good. They didn't even get to the point of thinking about simply having different accounts for different "voices", just as we do for X/IG/YT, which is pretty dumb.

Then the concern about analytics and all of that ... while I'm sure it's relevant to "creators", was somewhat alarming, especially given their open admission that marketing isn't really on top of that stuff anyway.

Of course the empowerment of the average user to pick a platform and the creator who wants to be able to easily move around without losing their audience ... these are mentioned really only in passing.

Very obvious they're accustomed to being shills for platforms TBH.

And of course, moderation, which is really the whole story about the fediverse ... is not mentioned once. But they've got dad jokes about cheese and the "feta-verse"!

I'd come to think very little of MKBHD, but to see him just kinda say "but muh platforms" without really thinking it through, as though the internet never happened, reveals IMO what he really is and what these mega-platforms have created.

tasket,

@maegul @liaizon I think moderation being the whole point is the reason why the fediverse will have to split in two. Instances will either want to moderate according to pre-Threads consensus, or they will drop their standards and expose their users to Threads. A third option will be to simply close up shop in disgust.

Yea, a split has been in the cards since the beginning of Threads's announcement I think. All the polling basically reflects this too IMO.

The big question for me is how accurately and effectively will user sentiment about this be reflected in the structure of the fediverse. I see it as a test of the fedi's decentralised system and its capacity to meet users' needs.

IMO, the inertia of instances is liable to fail and effectively subject many unwilling users to threads.

person72443,

@maegul @liaizon Yeah it was interesting to see the dichotomy between their "creator brain" and "consumer brain". As a creator, the first thought was: "But I post on LinkedIn differently from YouTube. How would that work?". As a consumer they immediately went "Oh yeah, I would want to have the 3rd party client world again!" And then that opened the gateway of "Ah okay so then we can expect them to handle followers like this and comments like that, etc etc"

Consumer v creator brain ... great way to capture it!

It was weird to see that there's dissonance there for them ... and kinda not realise that the existence of that dissonance is itself a phenomenon worth addressing.

person72443,

@maegul @liaizon Yeah, definitely. I wonder if age is a factor. If you only saw the tail end of the "protocol-first" internet era, the possibilities may not be as intuitive?

I'm imagining like "Salt water ocean. Okay, interesting. And how do frogs work?"
"Frogs? We don't have frogs. Our goal is to rehabilitate the coral reefs."
"The what??"

@person72443 @maegul I like how far these analogies are getting away from the OP
