Hive-minding this one. My taxes are basically the most simple they could be and little has changed since last year (similar amount, same work, same method of filing, no dependents or ANYTHING like that). I can't remember if I've gotten one of these letters before, I feel like maybe I have? Anyone else ever get one? Does it delay your refund massively?

@wendigo this is what I got in Feb, dated the 9th. It says 60 days. From filing or this letter? Not clear. They've contacted my work, I figured it was a general audit. That was March 14th I submitted the correct stuff to HR, they knew nothing but that they had to submit stuff (my license/ssn card). Heard nothing since.

@jake4480 Somebody is dragging their feet. It is tax season, so who knows what the window really is for a general audit. Do you have an account on the IRS site? I've used that before to gather information...

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@wendigo yeah, I do and it tells me nothing

@jake4480 I've had similar. In fact I got a "recalculation" where they wanted their $50.00 back (I'm pretty sure it cost them more than $50.00 to in the end not get their $50.00 back, because the problem was with the tax preparer screwing up (I guess)). After getting that sorted, it was the last time I trusted anyone else to do my taxes. Good luck...

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@jigmedatse ughh wow. Yeah I have NO idea what I'm up for 🤣

jigmedatse,
@jigmedatse@social.jigmedatse.com avatar

@jake4480 Well, I hope it's more in the lines of, "man you did a good job, there's no correction to be made here..." Because it's rarely, "you fucked up, you didn't declare these deductions, here's some more money."

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@jigmedatse ugh yeah. I hope it's a random audit, I did them super early, via CashApp, I just hope it doesn't delay the refund THAT much. And now I can't do anything about it until 60 days minimum. Hope I hear from them before then. LUCKILY, just luckily my state one popped in today, around the same amount, which will help til then. 🙄

jigmedatse,
@jigmedatse@social.jigmedatse.com avatar

@jake4480 That's good. It sucks that people depend on their refunds.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@jigmedatse it does. Simple stuff yknow? Paying off old cars. Wife needs a new phone, hers is 5+ years old and literally falling apart! 🤣

Found more info on the tax refund delay from the IRS (and thank you for everyone's help the other day- @mayorbeetles @artlung and @buermann). Check this video. Probably the Path Act/Child Tax Credit stuff. Looks like they're making sure those go out first.

In comparison, I filed my state taxes DAYS later (on Feb 9) than I did the federal (Jan 30) and I just got my state refund today, Feb 14 (luckily, for wifey's birthday). That's 5 days later. That's how doing taxes via CashApp is SUPPOSED to work.

Anyway, definitely check out this video.

@jake4480 @artlung @buermann that makes sense, glad it's not an audit or something!

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@mayorbeetles @artlung @buermann I'm hoping it's not really an audit too, even a simple one, even though they're not gonna find ANYTHING, it's just such a waste of time. But whatever I guess, I mean, I guess I've filed a ton of years without one, maybe my time is up. 🤣

@jake4480 @mayorbeetles @artlung

There was a lot of good reporting on the IRS' targeting of lower income tax payers a couple years ago. Biden got some funding through to rebalance it a little but I seem to remember it getting pulled back in a deal with the GOP, who treat underfunding the accounts receivable department as an existential matter while Democrats are happy to let it go because it doesn't hurt their fundraising efforts either.

@buermann @mayorbeetles @artlung nailed it. Hurting lower class as always. And you're right it's BOTH sides. ALL politicians are wealthy. When (and how) are people gonna push back on this crap haha

Last I checked AOC is still $940,000 short of being a millionaire.

@buermann @mayorbeetles @artlung she's like, one of the ONLY ones. And that's why she's so great

@jake4480

congratulations! an understaffed office will eventually manually review your return to make sure you didn't collect an undeserved child tax credit while Jeff Bezos continues unapologetically cashing welfare checks.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@buermann ugh. Wow. Yeah it HAS to be totally random, little to nothing has changed. I figure because I did it so early? Geez. Well, I guess now I wait the 60 days or hopefully sooner. This WOULD happen this year.

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@jake4480 Letter says "up to 60 days" - I would guess half that time. But that's pure intuition. Based on my own experience with IRS. Filing years late, having tens of thousands owed and on a payment plan, etc. (So many bad years thankfully past). I always found the IRS weirdly reasonable which I didn't expect and popular culture doesn't communicate at all. If you have an accountant in your life ask them their thoughts or who to talk to.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@artlung oh wow - yeah the 60 days is what I'm worried about haha. Last year it was so fast. I file with CashApp. I wonder if because I filed so early they flagged it? No idea. I used to do Turbo and then even H&R for a few years. Took longer for refund but never this. Ugh.

artlung,
@artlung@xoxo.zone avatar

@jake4480 It smells of a random check. I know a few family members and friends in the last 4 months get adjustments to prior returns. In one case some money back, and in another some money owed. Anecdata. For a question like this I really like "Ask Metafilter" which is a terrific service for getting answers to something like this.

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@artlung oh wow really - thank you! Gonna try that. Yeah, feels random right? I kinda feel like I've gotten one before but I honestly can't remember 🤣

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@artlung huge thanks for the Ask Metafilter tip, found the EXACT same thing, someone from 2015. Same circumstances. Some people say error, some say random. Then I find something on the IRS site itself, which points even more to random. Thanks, IRS 😑

mayorbeetles,
@mayorbeetles@pagan.plus avatar

@jake4480 You could have been flagged by the computer for some bullshit reason. Maybe check your credit reports though to see if anyone is using your SSN

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@mayorbeetles that's super weird. You may be right. I wonder how though. One thing is I did file with CashApp, but I did last year too. I was wondering if it was so early, I just got some bullshit audit. I just need this money so bad, it's KILLING me, yknow? It's such bs. This country, right 🙄
