Shocking story about mRNA pioneer/Nobel winner Katalin Karikó, whose early advisor at Temple tried to have her deported & derailed her career because she dared to look for a better-paying job.

Later, UPenn demoted her, then forced her out, because her research wasn't bringing in enough funding. #NobelPrize #science [HT Paul Novosad]

The story about Katalin Karikó's early career comes from the new book "A Shot to Save the World" by Gregory Zuckerman.

In interviews, Katalin Karikó remarkably expresses no bitterness about her experiences. Just a clear focus on the goal of using mRNA to treat human disease. https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2119757118 #Nobel #science

DWade25,

@coreyspowell She's an inspiration and a true hero.

@coreyspowell yet it was something else to see the shameless effort of UPenn admins to celebrate her success as their own... unreal

@coreyspowell Every now and then you run into one of those rare people who legitimately cares about trying to better humankind.

It's sad realizing how many today have joined antivaxxers in spreading misinformation and such, so won't even recognize the value of her work.

@coreyspowell science trains for, develops very thick skin.
Still she's totally inspiring and glad she is getting props and much deserved recognition

djvanness,

@coreyspowell Whoever authored this piece should really check themselves. How on earth was pursuing a position at JHU without "prior warning" a "mistake" on Kariko's part? She has every right to pursue other job opportunities on whatever terms she desires. Suhadolnik was apparently an abusive and unethical researcher - why should he get any sort of "prior warning." That particular phrasing is a form of victim blaming.

@djvanness Gregory Zuckerman. Apparently a writer for the NYT. Which sounds appropriate. @coreyspowell

sabeth,

@Mela @djvanness @coreyspowell Zuckerman actually writes for the Wall Street Journal.
UPenn reminds me also of the really bad experiences Susan Fowler (Rigetti) had in the physics department which she describes in Whistleblower.

@coreyspowell @tezoatlipoca And then had the audacity to take the credit. Shameless.

0x0FFF,

@coreyspowell this kind of shit it’s so, so, so, common in academia. There’s literally a support group on Reddit for people who are under a hostile advisor in their graduate program. It’s not rare or surprising at all frankly. Stories like this should be incredibly rare yet, they aren’t.

Is this the same Upenn that was involved in the Sexual abuse scandle a few years ago that resulted in them being banned from Football for several seasons ?

@coreyspowell Also in science, myopic elitism sucks. 😔

@coreyspowell To add equitable alt text, you can go into the image editing window and use the link "Detect text from image". That will OCR the image. Then it just needs proofreading. That helps blind and low vision people be able to read what sighted people are being given here.

beingextorted,

@coreyspowell And Temple is no better. My sister graduated from Temple. More stories of people identical to UPenn. It would seem as people get ingrained within a foundation, they view themselves as immune or worse, infallible while conducting required activities. The impression of infallibility reeks when they speak of their positions and it does reek! Personal experiences devolved into such a travesty. Ultimately an instructor lost credibility and a position.
Such are people and such is life.

beingextorted,

@coreyspowell The UPenn? A bastion of integrity settling suits for 13 million, 4.5 million and others for among other things, sexual harrassment, collusion with 16 other schools, retirement overages, excessive fees and even settled for a million with one of its professors.
I would never believe it would try to do anything so underhanded./s
It's a school. A rather good school. Yet like many other good institutions, there are people involved. People get greedy and/or perverse in thinking.

I love how its always the most anti-communistic people who jump right on the communism bandwagon when it works to their agenda.

tadbithuman,

@coreyspowell this type of abuse of international scholars is sadly too common. They are also systematically excluded from academia usually in favor of white people.

Wow! Suhadolnik did a reverse Rosalind Franklin:

Franklin died a few years before medals were awarded to other people, but her association with them let the world know that she had been a great .

Suhadolnik died a few years before a Nobel medal was awarded to another person, but his association with her let the world know that he had been an аsshole.
