@ai6yr One often-overlooked tip for people not used to having their cars covered in a thick icy crust: pull up your windshield wipers away from your windshield.

The wipers, if they get stuck to the glass, can warp and crack if you try to force them to move again before they thaw out when warming up your car.

It saves a lot of time and headache just to pull them up before it snows so that doesn't happen in the first place.

*Personal tip: If you live in a warm weather area, windshield wiper fluid may not have antifreeze in it (or if you are using water). In a hard freeze, your windshield wiper fluid will freeze and CRACK your coolant reservoir. Ask me how I know.

The fix is to put in windshield wiper fluid which has an antifreeze component to it. Adding alcohol to the wiper fluid can also work, if you just can't find windshield wiper fluid rated to lo temps. (rubbing alcohol).

@ai6yr
Note that in CA you can only buy winter-rated windshield wiper fluid in a limited number of counties:
https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/our-work/programs/consumer-products-program/complying-consumer-products-regulations/windshield

Because the alcohol added is a volatile organic compount (VOC) and a significant generator of air pollution.

@ncweaver Fascinating! That would explain my cracked windshield wiper reservoir, LOL. (the next time I did that, I dumped a bottle of rubbing alcohol in the tank.. probably causing smog).

@ai6yr it can also damage the pump.

@ai6yr Also, put the defroster on full blast when you start the car, instead of turning it on after the engine is warm. If you need to defrost the front window after the engine is warm, you have to start low & slowly warm it. Unless you enjoy a cracked windshield. Plus cars for super cold weather have electric engine block heaters (usually -20F or below) to keep fluids from freezing & cracking the engine. So a parking lot full of electrical outlets means cold winters.
