If you have a WordPress-powered blog, you can turn it into a Fediverse server and people will be able to follow the blog from Mastodon etc.

More info on how to do this here:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/wordpress-turning-your-blog-into-a-fediverse-server/

This works through the AcitvityPub for WordPress plug-in, which has just been updated to version 1.0.0:

➡️ https://wordpress.org/plugins/activitypub/

The plug-in is by @pfefferle in association with #Automattic, one of the major players behind WordPress itself.

@feditips @pfefferle Awesome concept!
You're helping us towards a place where we control our own information but it's still wonderfully 'socially connected'. I've been ranting to all who don't immediately walk away that this is how social media should be.
Thank you.

This is what the Web was meant to be. People empowered to spin up servers that can communicate with other servers

annamariaeriksson,

@feditips @pfefferle how do you get this to work when you have a multisite subfolder install?

My user profile works, and so does the enabled blogs who are on a standalone top domain. I have 3 or 4 blogs in a subfolder, and I can't see them on mastodon. Help please!

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@annamariaeriksson

Hmm, I'm not sure how to help, think this is definitely a question for @pfefferle !

annamariaeriksson,

@feditips @pfefferle Thank you. I am desperate! 😂

@annamariaeriksson @pfefferle

Was also going to suggest the support forum at:

https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/activitypub/

...but I see you've already posted there! 😁

drimplausible,
@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

@feditips @pfefferle Installed it and gave it a shot last night, and while I can see the poster ID from the blog here on Mastodon (ie: @Dr.Implausible ), I'm not seeing either of the two posts I made there on here.

The link under the user profile will take me back to a filtered view of the blog.

Hmmm. Might be a me problem, granted. But very close.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@drimplausible @pfefferle @Dr.Implausible

Did you do the blog posts before or after you followed the account?

If no one from your server has followed an account, your server won't notice its posts. If at least one person on your server follows an account, your server will notice posts made after the following happened, but not posts made before that.

Try posting after you've followed the account.

drimplausible,
@drimplausible@mastodon.online avatar

@feditips @pfefferle @Dr.Implausible Thank you. Thought I had it correct last night, but it appears to be coming through in the feed now.

Tagging on the blog appears to port over directly into

I set it for the limited version, not full text, as I can ramble.

A couple tweaks still needed, but it appears to be successful!

Direct posting from to the

via Wordpress is possible!

Awesome! Thank you!

I think it would be super helpful for the Fediverse if we could promote a few high-profile accounts that are using a using lots of Fediverse platforms, Mastodon, Pixelfed, Frednica and now Wordpress, etc all working together as one.

When people reply to your posts, does it show up as a comment in wordpress?

Does anything happen in wordpress when they favorite or boost?

pfefferle,
@pfefferle@mastodon.social avatar

@MegaMichelle @feditips comments will show up in WordPress but nothing more atm. but comments/replys/reactions will be a focus topic of one of the next versions!

@melroy @feditips also fine 🙂

MarioMakesStuff,

@feditips @pfefferle Cool! Now do Blogger. :D

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@MarioMakesStuff @pfefferle

Unfortunately Blogger isn't an open platform. There's no way to host your own Blogger, it's effectively just part of Google.

WordPress is free open software so anyone can host it.

pfefferle,
@pfefferle@mastodon.social avatar

@MarioMakesStuff that would be also nice! But as @feditips said, this has to be done by google because it is a closed platform!

@feditips @pfefferle "No, this does not work with free blogs from wordpress.com, because they do not allow installation of plug-ins. You will need an independently hosted WordPress-powered blog that allows plug-ins."

Important to know.

pfefferle,
@pfefferle@mastodon.social avatar

@adrianmorales @feditips for now, but we ( @mattwiebe and myself ) are about to release it on WordPress.com in the next few days/weeks. So every user will be able to use it, regardless of their tariffs.

@pfefferle Stellar work!

wbeebe,

@feditips @pfefferle
That's all well and good, but for me to install that plugin with WordPress, I'd need to upgrade my plan from Personal, which costs US$18/year, to Business, which costs $40/month, or US$480/year. No thanks, I can't afford that.

73ms,

@feditips @pfefferle it is a good effort but I checked a few installations running this and it seems to be completely invisible on all I saw, you just have to somehow be able to know you can search for the account of a user on the fediverse... I guess it would be quite useful to have some kind of visible UI elements that get enabled with it as well.

pfefferle,
@pfefferle@mastodon.social avatar

@73ms @feditips the new version brings some nice blocks, to add a "follow" dialogue to your side and/or show your followers!

See: https://notiz.blog/follow/##Fediverse or https://notiz.blog/followers/

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@73ms @pfefferle

"you just have to somehow be able to know you can search for the account of a user"

Um... I am probably missing the point, but isn't that true for all social media accounts?

73ms,

@feditips well, I think discoverability is important and one way to make it happen is that a plugin like this offers ways to show visitors they can interact via ActivityPub. Seems like the latest version does already have that part covered per what @pfefferle said.

An even better way might be to have this in the browser in a similar way to how you used to see the RSS icon on the browser address bar at least in Firefox back when RSS was in vogue and how the Streetpass extension does it (https://streetpass.social/) but I doubt we are going to see a (or maybe rather the) major browser support this as a built-in feature anytime soon.

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@73ms @pfefferle

You could add a Fediverse icon and account address to the header/footer of your blog?

73ms,

@feditips of course but my point was that for it would be best to have the plugin include widgets/whatever that don't even require that. Like I said when checking out a few WP sites that had this installed I noticed many of them had nothing to indicate the sites had ActivityPub.

michael_martinez,
@michael_martinez@c.im avatar

@73ms @feditips @pfefferle There are ways to promote Mastodon/fediverse accounts on any WordPress blog (even free WordPress.Com accounts) via widgets in sidebars and footers.

I'm experimenting with ActivityPub + Friends plugins on several blogs but because the Featured Images don't display properly for me when I view them from this account, I'm not sure I want to promote those blogs directly.

I'm still manually sharing content when it's published to ensure I can see my Featured Images. But I'm probably just being prissy at this point.

The Friends plugin is still a little iffy but it's recently been enhanced and I need to scale up my experimentation to learn more about what to expect.

pfefferle,
@pfefferle@mastodon.social avatar

@michael_martinez @73ms @feditips can you send me an example post and explain to me what you do not like or what you expect? Maybe I can help you with some tweakings.

michael_martinez,
@michael_martinez@c.im avatar

@pfefferle

This is a recent post and the screen capture below is what I see. I don't use a Mastodon client. I only access it from the C.im Website, if that matters.

I also don't use the Gutenberg editor in WordPress. I use the Classic Editor (in case that matters).

And this post was published on a multisite network (using subdomains).

The "Not Available" is where the Featured Image should be.

jiangshanghan,

@feditips may i ask,is there any way for people follow wordpress.com blogs by mastodon accounts?

feditips,
@feditips@mstdn.social avatar

@jiangshanghan

I've tried to cover this in the guide linked in the original post.

Short answer is: wordpress.com free accounts don't have plugin support, so there's no way to use plugins with them.

Wordpress.com paid accounts do allow plugins, but they are very expensive compared to WordPress through indie hosting companies.

If you read the link in the original post there is a lot more info on this.

atarifrosch,

@feditips @pfefferle Unfortunately it breaks . Had to delete the plugin. Blog was only showing blank pages after upgrading to 1.0.0 (and it didn't work beforehand, too).

pfefferle,
@pfefferle@mastodon.social avatar

@atarifrosch @feditips in version 1.0.0 the plugin makes some extensions to the Block-Editor, so this might be what breaks ClassicPress.

atarifrosch,

@pfefferle @feditips error.log acknowledges. Will there be a version in the future that can be used with ClassicPress?
