What happens when you mandate masks at a conference now that most people no longer wear them but medically vulnerable people are still at risk because #CovidIsNotOver? In the case of #PyConUS, the conference sells out.
Why a masking policy? “Many of us and our fellow community members can’t attend without health and safety guidelines in place. We want PyCon US to be an event that everyone feels safe attending,” organizers explained.
My best guess is that these multiple countries dont want to commit to fighting against the “anti lgbtq movement”.
For Romania, this is exactly the issue. The political situation is pretty crazy, we have a political party called AUR which is the worst reactionary tinfoil hat collection of crazies, very reminiscent of extreme US republicans. They are currently a fringe party, but growing. The mainstream socially conservative party (PSD, a socialist party… long story) don’t want to lose voters to the crazies, so they have to portray themselves as anti-LGBT. An alliance of socially progressive and economically liberal parties (PNL, USR+) is currently in power, and want to concentrate on how amazing the economy is and freeze social issues because they’re too divisive to win elections on.
The asymmetrical internet speeds are intended to keep hobbyists and small businesses from self-hosting, thereby driving traffic to larger companies. I wonder if ISPs get any kind of kickback from large companies like AWS, cloudflare, or digital ocean. Like, reduced hosting costs for their websites and internal cloud services.
Takes tinfoil hat off
The reality is that it’s probably a lot cheaper for ISPs to make connections asymmetrical because it effectively lets them pump up their download speed numbers for free. However, ISPs really should give customers the option to custom allocate bandwidth. Instead of saying X upload, Y download, you get X Mbps maximum and can choose the upload/download split.

Better get your tinfoil hat then. What @davidgro says is right, your fantasy ideas are just that. Sure, in coming centuries this tech might be possible to be miniaturised and read externally, but for now that’s not even close to possible.
The NY times has a vested interest in discrediting AI, specifically LLMs (what they seem to be referring to) since journalism is a huge target here since it’s pretty easy to get LLMs to generate believable articles. So how I break down this article:
Lean on Betterridge’s law of headlines to cast doubt about the long term prospects of LLMs
Further the doubt by pointing out people don’t trust them
Present them as a credible threat later in the article
Juxtapose LLMs and cryptocurrencies while technically dismissing such a link (then why bring it up?)
Leave the conclusion up to the reader
I learned nothing new about current or long term LLM viability other than a vague “they took our jerbs!” emotional jab.
AI is here to stay, and it’ll continue getting better. We’ll adapt to how it changes things, hopefully as fast or faster than it eliminates jobs.
I HATE to put on a tinfoil hat, but this is the best thing that could have happened to the ruling party. They are already in the middle of dismantling the media and justice. This will accelerate the process.
Fucking hand in your gumshoes and deboonker hats, stop pretending you’re capable of parapolitical investigations right the hell now and go watch Seinfeld reruns (or Corner Gas reruns if you’re Canadian) cause no one in that thread has any business looking into stuff anymore. Sounds like an issue with their work force. Without placing my tin foil hat on they need to hire more people to moderate and clean TOS breaking content.
puts tinfoil hat on
Meta is purposefully allowing far right militias to organize because a libertarian/conservative hellscape would mean their corporation becomes one of the largest fiefdoms.
I listened to #Canadaland Short Cuts last night. It was pretty interesting and I hope some of the people involved in the #FreePalestine movement, especially at #McGill, give it a listen
I am a bit disappointed that Jesse's guest @justinling didn't plug his Mastodon account? I've bothered Goldsbie on here before about why the journos all chose Bluesky and I half-suspect Jesse Brown decided his newsroom is going to double doen on his bad pro-Twitter, anti-Mastodon take from late 2022. Maybe that's tinfoil hat of me but it's perplexing when Justin actually has an account that he seemingly still uses!
When Harper was still in power, the Canadian government had a deal where the oil companies would get subsidized until the oil sands were profitable.
So Canada was giving the oil companies billions.
I'm putting on my tinfoil hat now.
Trudeau rushed to buy the pipeline when it was canceled. Is that because the oil sands can't be profitable without the pipeline, and this deal is bleeding Canada dry?
I just thought of this now, I'd love some criticism if anyone's got some.
Alcohol makes more babies to keep the labor flowing so rich people can keep getting richer. Don’t abort it, that’s against religion. Just keep it alive until it can work. This is my tinfoil hat theory.

Google search is now filled with rubbish before you even get to the search results. Google podcast is shutting down an app it doesnt even need to shut down and could still run it but instead closing it up all together by forcing to cut off the feeds service.

In the show “Silicon Valley”, a satire of it’s namesake, there’s a billionaire tech ceo (like Google level) who gets weekly blood transfusions from a college student in great health.
If you’d kindly adjust your tinfoil hat, there’s a lot of conspiracy theories out there that blood transfusions from healthy young people are a regular “health service” used by the elite.
