mom had another stroke. a nurse put her on the phone after getting settled in PCU; she still remembers me but her mind is not working as intended as she struggles to get words out that make sense. this has been the slowest train to hell. watching her life chip away over a six year period.

You know who will never mine your private communications to train an LLM?

Better yet, you know whose words you don't need to trust, because you aren't obligated to use any particular server? And the software is open source? And regularly audited by security researchers?

Matrix.

It's not perfect, but no tool is. It's a matter of what trade offs you're willing to accept. Just sayin' ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Thankfully, at the core of Matrix upstream, I am quite happily up to my ears in fellow queer and disabled folks. YMMV!

The protocol is also used by dissidents, sex workers, and marginalized people.

I'm not sure what communication tools you'll have left if you filter out all the ones that happen to be used by law enforcement, but I'm also not here to persuade. Take care ✌️

The solidarity at stores between masked people is pretty funny sometimes 🥰. I ran into a Whole Foods to drop off a return from Amazon (no, this sweater isn't 100% cotton, as a matter of fact, it's made of effing plastic, thank you), and an older gentleman and I were like "Hang in there!" -- "Yup! You too!" ❤️

Anecdata on the prevalence of masking across recent travels:

Significantly more common in London than Malmo, Copenhagen, and Helsinki -- saw just 6 other people masked across many thousands of people, 2 of which were in chinstrap mode 😂 And at least three times as prevalent in San Francisco than in London.

Many factors at play, no doubt. I find it fascinating! Makes me grateful for what we've got here in the SF Bay Area.
