I just remembered I have to localise all the App Store screenshots 😵

Vision Pro's international launch will be even tougher now that we know the device is two whole chip generations behind the iPad, and we've seen Apple's lackluster content/release cadence for it.

It desperately needs a whole lot more developer support and that doesn't come for free. Once that interest dies out…

Incidentally, forScore is the closest thing I've seen to a killer app

@stroughtonsmith @b3ll I would be much more tempted to spend €3000 on a max-spec iPad than on a Vision Pro right now.

(I do not have €3000 to spend on either right now)

Remember when Sam Altman was ousted from OpenAI and then claims that his sister had accused him of abusing her as a child resurfaced and the whole internet collectively shrugged and went back to cheering for him to take over what might be one of the most consequential businesses of the 21st century?

Because I think about it a lot.

SwiftUI noob question: I understand why my ViewModel is being initialized twice, but why is it not being deinitialized?

It's created, then a second later when appState.show is changed, the view is recomputed, and view, and its ViewModel, are created anew. Cool! But why is the old one not deinitialized? What's holding onto it?

If you haven’t already seen a dozen people raving about it, allow me to be the one to tell you to go play Animal Well.

It’s an exquisitely crafted puzzle-exploration game, that shares a lot of DNA with Hollow Knight. There’s some tight platforming, but very little combat.

I gather it was made my a single guy over the course of 7 years, and the passion is on full display as you slowly learn just how many layers there to every aspect of the game

A screen from animal well showing a number of crows perched above the playable character

@glennf I think the Indoor part effectively means on a treadmill. If not I’ve been doing it wrong for a number of years 😅

In dealing with localisation, I’m realising how nice it would be if Apple introduced a crowdsourcing system for users to contribute translations and have it directly integrated into Xcode

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli yeah that’s what I’m using, it’s just a bit of a hassle to import and export new copies the whole time.

Though it’s a lot better than it used to be

I hate to shill Plinky again before adding more features but from what I gather ProductHunt is still a pretty valuable resource these days, and thanks to @chrismessina Plinky is on ProductHunt today. If you'd like to ask a question or upvote the app, I'd be happy to see you over there today. 🙂 https://www.producthunt.com/posts/plinky

I’ve spent the last decade making award winning iOS apps, and I’d like to take what I’ve learned and help design your apps too.

If you’re interested in working together, get in touch with me at ben@obscura.studio

(and if you’re not interested, please share!)

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

Being both designer and developer means I’m not going to suggest anything extravagant that’s a nightmare to actually build and I can help with implementing designs in UIKit and SwiftUI.

And if you’re an indie on a tight budget, I’d be happy to negotiate pricing, because I know how to tough it be to pay for services out of your own pocket.

I’ve always been curious why the big iPad Pro kept the 4:3 aspect ratio while all the others shifted to 10:7

Did Apple ever explain this @viticci @jsnell @gruber?

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli I think the more rectangular it is the less screen you get for the same diagonal measurement :P

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@matthewcassinelli I don't think I have a preference either way (though I've never owned a non-4:3 iPad), I just find it curious ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I would be amazing if I could “Mac Mirror” from an iPad Pro just like I can from Vision Pro, but it would run from my MacBook sitting closed in my backpack

It would be the perfect portable computer on planes, coffee shops, etc where I’m more than happy to give up the big screen

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman Having to have both devices nearby is a pretty big limitation, but this might be the best bang-for-your-buck improvement

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman I don't see that many use cases where you’d want to carry both, don't have room for an iPad, but not a laptop. An airplane seat is a good example, but in a cafe I feel you should have room for a laptop?

It would be handy at home though, where I could access my desktop from another room. (I do this already with Screens on iOS and Screen Sharing from my laptop)

BenRiceM,
@BenRiceM@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman I have a 13" MacBook Air and a 12.9” iPad Pro so I guess it’s not really a factor for me right now 😜
