In 1849 were people actually told that there was gold in San Francisco or did they know it was another 80 miles away after they got off the boat?

It sure would be a bummer to get all the way to San Francisco (pre-Panama canal) and then realize you had to go another 80+ miles up on the hills to even have a chance.

Just remembering the time a third grader wrote "Ms Harris is a bicth" in my classroom

and I said "Listen, class. I know every single one of you knows how to spell b-i-t-c-h because you tell on each other all the time and spell it out. This is embarrassing that you'd write "bic-th"

And I totally won teaching that day.

Remember the student I reconnected with last week? He wanted to loop in his BFF from my class in first grade who is still his BFF so we all three had lunch today.

These kids are from the roughest part of Oakland. They grew up in poverty. They both have good jobs and good partners and are breaking the cycle of childhood poverty in a massive way.

It is so so amazing to see little kids you worried about and tried to take care of turn into awesome adults.

Every time I go to San Francisco I wonder if I can call myself a San Franciscan in any way. I was born there, I'm 6th generation, I've always lived right outside it and always spent lots of time in it but...

I'm the first generation in my family since we came here for the Gold Rush* to not be able to afford living IN the city.

So does that mean I don't get to? I want to be a 6th generation San Franciscan but... stupid housing prices and stupid losing of generational wealth.

*my great-great-great grandfather didn't come to mine, but came to sell overpriced supplies to miners, which I think is where the real money was made.
