Retired git on Colorado’s Front Range. I take photos of birds and critters and flowers and mountains and skies I was a failure at that other place. My only followers were apparently pornbots. The sky was so EXTRA tonight. I can never see a true sunset from our house because of the trees, but the sky was beautiful. I have not done a single thing to this photo. Also took a video. You can barely hear a barred owl at the beginning.

You and @DemocracySpot are reminding me to look at the sky more here where I am. We get some incredible cloudscapes and I never think to take pictures. I have the same problem with trees around my house, so I’m usually in the car when I see any good skies.

We have a cybertruck - and by extension, a cybertruck owner - roaming around our local community.

To confirm: they do look stupid in the wild.

My sympathies. In my area (pop <170K) there are a lot of EVs of various brands. And while most of them seem to be Teslae I have yet to see a single Cyber Truck. Lots of pickups, because it’s the West, but aside from 2 or 3 Rivians they’re all RAMs or Fx50s, with a few Toyotas and Nissans mixed in.

How much alone time vs socializing do you need?

For me there are a few people who are usually equalizing, and I can just be around them, so I won't count that. But generally, I find about 3 times a week, I'm game for socializing. A day in between to rest is usually nice, but the larger the gathering or if we go somewhere particularly noisy or I'm meeting new people that involves more effort, and my social battery empties sooner. I'm very curious where everyone else falls on this!

This cartoonist seems to get it.

Cartoon by Waylon Bacon.
I like the conceptual complexity of this cartoon, on top of the social dynamic.
I think it’s cool that our viewpoint is actually from behind the two men, yet we see them from their front in the mirrored reflection. But because, apparently, we’re vampires, we don’t see our own reflection.

I am curious if the "announcment" feature Mastodon admins have access to is actually useful.

I suspect many people never see them. I think I've only ever seen it displayed in the "official" mastodon web UI. And never in any of the (many) apps I use.

Feel free to boost for reach.

I rarely use the web ui, and use @Ivory on my phone and iPad. I’m not aware of any way to see the announcements in .

Putting sensory deprivation tank on my bucket list. Anyone need anything from the other dimension? (Will not kidnap people)

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@farah
I would like to suggest a slight, but significant difference to your bucket list, if you don’t mind. Rather than the term, sensory deprivation, I prefer sensory isolation. This was the original name for the tanks Dr. John Lilly proposed. The tanks do not deprive you of your senses, but instead isolate them from external stimuli, essentially allowing your brain/mind to generate its thoughts from purely (almost) internal processes. A slightly gentler way of looking at it, I think.

Schadenfreude is complicated for me. It seems like a really dark way to find pleasure? I mean I get it, no doubt, I just feel like indulging in it too much isn't healthy.

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1
As humans, we have a sense of justice. It’s rooted—or conjoined with, in some sense—a sense of agency, both our own and that of other beings. A common definition of justice is something like, you get what you deserve. Religions preach that in various ways. Karma, heaven and hell, that stuff.
Schadenfreude, imo, is a celebration at seeing justice served, irl, in real time. Slap-stick mimics justice, but skews it in several dimensions. It can be harder to decode sometimes.

“Here lies a nearly-complete archive of Whole Earth publications, a series of journals and magazines descended from the Whole Earth Catalog, published by Stewart Brand and the POINT Foundation between 1970 and 2002. They are made available here for scholarship, education, and research purposes. The Whole Earth Catalog was an American counterculture magazine and product catalog published by Stewart Brand several times a year between 1968 and 1972, and occasionally thereafter, until 1998. The magazine featured essays and articles, but was primarily focused on product reviews. The editorial focus was on self-sufficiency, ecology, alternative education, ‘do it yourself,’ and holism, featuring the slogan ‘access to tools.’”

Autocorrect keeps changing casket to gasket.

Although I don't write about caskets that often, and AC might think it is doing the right thing when it changes casket to gasket, it changes the entire flow of the conversation, post or writing. 😂

PSA: With that said, always make sure your casket has a good gasket. :awesome:

qurlyjoe,
@qurlyjoe@mstdn.social avatar

I’ve noticed that my iPad’s AC seems to have a bit of short term memory for stuff like that. When I notice that it’s made a change, and I uncorrect it, it will remember the next time I type that word, as long as not too long a time has elapsed.

I went to a Hooters once while on a trip with a friend, just to “prove our manhood” and say we’d been to one. The weirdest thing to see was other guys getting take-out. Wait. What? Nobody goes there for the food. We had a nice chat with our waitress, who was a transplant from where we lived at that time.

A comment from The National Review.

“Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi and the nation’s foreign minister were killed when their helicopter crashed in the fog. Raisi, known as the “Butcher of Tehran,” was responsible for the deaths of thousands, going back decades, through his actions in Iran’s domestic affairs and its support for terrorism around the world. We join others in expressing our deepest condolences to the helicopter.”
