Let's put people back in control of their technology. The Fediverse is a good start. Also wondering aloud where we are taking this planet.

New_ Public is starting a project on hyperlocal online communities -- neighborhoods, towns, that kind
of thing.

I'd be in, if something like this existed in my neighborhood, and is better than Nextdoor!

Not liking the terminology in this OpenID spec: "A federation can be expressed as an agreement between parties that trust each other."

As a non-technical example, the US of A is a federation. This implies that Texas and California trust each other. Doubtful.

It's also not the same way we think about the "federation" part of the Fediverse, although I'm not sure that we've ever attempted to crisply define what we mean by federation and not.

I'm working on something really interesting. The "social web" -- a concept that has been around for decades but has fallen out of use and is atrophied because all we have are quasi-"social apps" Which Are Not That! -- it needs and wants a new breath of air.

If we re-imagined a truly social web with what we know today, what would it look like?

It's fascinating and so exciting!! Not sure when or whether I have something to share any time soon, but ... writing about it gets me all fired up!!

Apparently I'm going to @dweb camp in August. In the redwoods. In a tent. With a laptop.

Beats still conferences in overpriced hotels wearing a tie.

Python just cost me half an hour. The problem: a comma instead of a period.

Runtime and two linters said everything was fine. Except it wasn't.

Soapbox: Programming languages should not have syntaxes where something like this is possible. Compact syntax is all nice and dandy, but there needs to be enough redundancy that things like this are easily caught. Otherwise we'd all still write software in hex.

“Farcaster, a crypto-based social network, raised $150M with just 80K daily users”

You can do something with that kind of money. I wonder what they will.

I really got the new espresso machine for espresso. That doesn't mean I can't try making cappuccino. Turns out the "textured" (as they call it) milk can get a structure where it can actually form a half-inch hill. Somewhat amazed at the physics (chemistry?) here.

Pondering how the group thinks of having consistent reply trees across instances for the purpose of forum software. One proposal is to have a “group” actor re-announce everything that has been sent to it. It appears to me this approach would work just as well in a microblogging context where we have, today, the inconsistent reply tree problem across instances as well. The actor that made the root post would act as the re-announcer.

That’s over 125F.

What would it take for #Mastodon to become that political organizing app instead of Twitter or Threads? Isn’t it a much more logical place?

Anybody trying to make it so? Any reasons that speak against?

Imagine two identical #social #networks with mainstream users. Same number of users, same connectedness of the social graph, same demographics etc.

Social network A only has an algorithmic feed. Social network B only has a chronological people-I-follow feed.

What would the usage numbers look like in comparison? Numbers of posts, numbers of likes/replies/boosts, growth trajectory, etc?

I would expect somebody has done some research on this. Anybody know of any public results?

Anybody else see what he apparently sees?
