Ugh, i've been having more stress dreams/nightmares that involve awful transphobia being done to me. But I rarely encounter transphobia like that in my day to day life, so i don't even know why my brain goes there. Best guess: brain is trying to prepare for future feared transphobia by playing out scenarios or my brain has just internalized it fully as a stressor to manifest when processing stress...ugh

It's about time that I got in on #MusicWomenWednesday (with @loewe ) and share the most recent band I've been obsessed with.

Artist: Bridge City Sinners (Frontperson: Libby, she/they)

Why? Describing this as "dark neofolk" doesn't really describe how they bring together diverse styles of vocals and instrumentation that pull both from metal and the dark sides of country and folk. Not to mention some of the songs really speak to those of us living with mental illness or otherwise on the margins.

1. We get 2, count them TWO, whole months of Pride! North county and easy county do most of their events in June, while San Diego city itself does the pride march in July. One-sixth of our year is unbridled gayness!

Is it just me or does it actually seem like corporations are afraid to do a Rainbow Capitalism this year?

Maybe it's just because Pride started on a Saturday, but I'm noticing far fewer featured pride product lines, sales, etc. than the past several years. Last year, Target started to retreat and hide away Pride merch or just take it out of their stores altogether in some places. But other companies that would usually do a little email announcing the sale of Pride merch or something are either not doing it or are actually making it hard to find and featuring other sales instead.

Maybe it's too early and they are planning it over the next few weeks...it just seems conspicuous. I'm gonna circle back around to this after the month goes on because this could actually be an important thermometer on the state of things in some circles

Guitar Wolf destroyed me with everlasting high energy punk rock last night...and it was absolutely worth it! Japanese Punk Rock from that era has always been a favorite of mine, and to actually get to see one of those legendary bands perform in person was absolutely amazing.

Also, those guys are like 20 years older than me but still had more energy than half the audience there after a full set and two encore performances!

Multiple moments of crowdsurfing occurred wherein i had the privilege to touch Japanese rock legend butts!

They pulled an older lady up on stage at one point and just handed her a guitar....and through the power of rock inspired her to open up and jump around stage rocking out with them on the guitar!

Basically, if you get the chance go see them while they're touring the US because it was absolutely brilliant.

Trans reflections:

When i was a guy, i was often assumed to be like 5 years older than I was, and often treated as more mature and knowledgable than I actually was. I was seen as an absent-minded professor type, and given grace in my mistakes and treated as very credible (the persuasiveness of confident white man voice is dangerous).

As a woman, i am often assumed to be roughly 10 years younger than i am (estrogenated vampire skin!), and people assume I am inexperienced or don't know how to do a lot of things. Meanwhile, now, I have over a decade and a half of nonprofit management and community engagement experience, I am a published trans studies scholar who teaches queer and trans studies, I run a program serving hundreds of trans youth across the country, and more. I've lived in 5 radically different countries and speak 3 languages. And like...I'm now often talked down too and seen as inexperienced and discounted as probably not knowing much.

One of the funniest things about how my brain responded to having severe ADHD: i get hyperfocused on metaphors and then tangents within the metaphors until they spiral out of control and lose any coherence. 😅

It makes for some interesting observations...once own parses and clears the wreckage of my derailed train of thought. And the train derailed because it hit a cow and there's just metaphorical viscera and entrails all over the place anx now we need to call in a specialist technician to help get the train of thought back on track but they aren't available on weekends so we'll just have to deal with this metaphor being an absolute disaster....um, what was i talking about? 😅

Super random #music question: Are there any #HipHop or #Rap musical artists people would suggest that play with horror/dark fantasy/goth-y themes?

I just realized that while I know so many other genres that cross over into horror themes (from psychobilly to hyperpop), I can't name any that are more rooted in Hip Hop, Rap, or R & B. I gotta imagine that there's someone crossing over into these themes. I mean, MF Doom did amazing things playing with superhero and fantasy, gotta imagine there's someone who has done similar with horror.

Oh, I forgot, the other day was my HRT Anniversary! 4 years on estrogens! Roughly 5 years of transing about in the world and becoming me!

I'm pretty sure that means I'm in my early 20s in trans years and it tracks given that I am NOT ready to have kids of my own and would rather recklessly spend the night out dancing at a lesbian bar than get sleep...but I have the body of someone approaching 40 and it does not tolerate since indiscretion 🤣​

Now that I have returned to okcupid and they insist on showing me straight people, my random sampling of straight people in southern California on the app has revealed an important finding: being straight is bad for your skin!!!?!

Seriously though, why do so many straight, cis women my age look like they are 10 or 20 years older than me? And like, I am used to us trans girls having estrogenated vampire skin, but even the cis lesbians have healthy skin well into their 40s and 50s.
