Wertes Folg,

ich suche jemanden, der*die mir über die Technik des Handynetzes (und die Herausforderungen dahinter) was erzählen kann und mag. Eventuell als Format 60min Talk + 30min Q&A, fully remote.

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

I'm always surprised how much fun it is to debug mechanical problems instead of IT problems. I need more spare time for car and motorbike servicing. Today: engine oil leak due to [probably improperly installed] shaft seal

@cristianyxen I did service motorbikes (and still do) for decades, servicing cars never really felt as much fun, but it seems lately I'm getting the hang of it. I still really dislike driving them, though.

Time for some relaxing car repairs (I really do enjoy mechanical work while listening to podcasts). Mh, no wonder this shaft seal doesn't really seal anything

@LaF0rge Do you know if I can purchase a single eSIM and install it on two different cards:

Even if only one would be able to connect to the network at the same time.

When I've bought eSIM's they come with warnings that they can't be moved to a different device, not sure if there's some sort of UUID from the eUICC that locks that ID to the purchased eSIM.

The goal is to have one eSIM in laptop and same account on phone. Only using one at a time is fine w/o card swap

https://shop.sysmocom.de/sysmoEUICC1-eUICC-for-consumer-eSIM-RSP/sysmoEUICC1

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

@purpleidea Absolutely not. What you are proposing is fundamentally against what SIM cards (as well as eSIM profiles) are designed for. They explicitly are made to prevent duplication/cloning. Many operators offer subscriptions that include/permit multiple [e]SIMs in the same account. They have separate IMSIs but are accounted to the same subscription. I use that for laptop+phone.

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

@purpleidea technically there is a procedure for migrating an eSIM profile from one eUICC to another. As that involves the SM-DP+ server, you require its cooperation/approval when doing so. So the eSIM profile issuer (often SaaS on behalf of the mobile operator) can allow or prevent it based on policy.

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

@purpleidea I am not really an expert in subscriptions/plans. I'm using Vodafone Germany here, where multiple SIMs in one contract/plan are supported for as long as I can remember.

short video clip on 125 years of TELENORMA (historical German telecommunications manufacturer): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVzSzFKywL4 #retronetworking #telephony

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

@malte I didn't even know TN made desktop PCs at some point. It's quite common for equipment from that pre-www period to not have any information online. Unless there's some collector documenting it, like we do for telecom equipment at https://osmocom.org/projects/retronetworking/wiki/Retronetworking -most of that also has no other information about it.

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

@malte it's quite usual for material (data sheets, marketing material, manuals) from equipment designed in the pre-internet days like a 286 class PC to never have existed in digital form. And even a lot of technology from the mid to late 90s often is not well documented/preserved on the internet as mass storage was still very expensive, companies went bankrupt, etc.

Looking forward to the Osmocom Developer Conference starting tomorrow - that means meeting lots of old and new friends as well as an exciting schedule of technical talks. Schedule at https://pretalx.sysmocom.de/osmodevcon2024/schedule/ - most of them will be recorded and published by @c3voc

A lot of resources about the legalities of licences are extremely US-centric.

Where are the articles and papers on the application of the GPL in European legal systems?

(The EUPL is cool, but doesn't apply in my case.)

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

@alda a lot of GPL enforcement out and in court has happened specifically in Germany. There is also excellent German legal literature on the topic like the famous Jaeger/Metzger book.

In recent years (since 2018) there were a number of court cases in China related to the and other copyleft licenses. For a (chinese) list/summary, see https://www.openatom.org/law/database - the only sad part is that all of them about damages claims between companies; no community-oriented enforcement.

Wondering why there is no such thing as HTTP-over-USB or HTTP-over-Bluetooth, because it would vastly improve device interactions.

LaF0rge,
@LaF0rge@chaos.social avatar

@henryk @promovicz HTTP over TLS over ISO7816-3 (SCP81) is widely deployed and used in the SIM card industry. However, most cards are not accessed over USB-CCID. And the HTTP payload is of course usually not Web pages but [ironically] often itself ISO7816 APDUs for remote file Management or remote application Management. And the card is the HTTP client, unlike the [dead] SCWS.
