DNS is so critical to the modern Internet, yet it's so often taken for granted. NCommander explores The Old Ways of life with UNIX without DNS.

yesterday and today marks the first time we've transmitted Telefax G4 over our OCTOI community ISDN-over-IP network using an actual historical G4 capable fax machine (Canon FAX-L260i) - the machine itself can print D- and B-channel protocol traces!

thanks to @manawyrm for being the remote (software G4 fax) endpoint for sending/receiving G4 fax over OCTOI

Rescued yet another old smartphone (Palm Treo) whose rubery plastic has become sticky/goo-ey (de-polymerization) by using an ultrasonic bath with Tickopur TR14, a chemical intended for removing flux residue from circuit boards

The next incarnation of RetroNetCall, our monthly virtual get-together of enthusiasts is happening again this week (March 6th) at 20:00 CET. See https://osmocom.org/news/249 for the announcement. It features a presentation on G4 Telefax protocol trace decoding. (G4 is the rarely used digital-only telefax service used over ISDN)

Big photo session taking high-res photos of each and every circuit board in a EWSD switch yesterday. Will all go to the wiki after editing.

edited circuit board photographs of each EWSD switch circuit board in our collection now in the wiki below https://osmocom.org/projects/retronetworking/wiki/EWSD_Components - now we "just" need to add description texts and metadata like part numbers, cross-references, etc.

I just received an invoice from ITU
(International Telecommunications Union). Their letterhead states a TELETEX number (in 2024!). I love it. - now I seriously wonder how I might be able to get connected to a public network that can reach it.

@AngelaScholder note that Telex is a rather common technology and you will find many enthusiasts around it, for example in the i-Telex network. However, Teletex is super obscure. I'm one of the few collectors with an actual device, and I know of no efforts to create ant network simulation beyond my humble research and unpublished first steps https://media.ccc.de/v/retronetcall-20230607-laforge-teletex

I wish that deranged collaboration tool #teams are being tortured with nowadays would be more like its ancient predecessor: Microsoft #NetMeeting. Its feature set was ahead of its time and the clean, native UI was made for productivity. Unfortunately - besides being EOL - it doesn't support IPv6 & is based on H.323, which means it won't work behind NAT offhand.

Apropos ancient predecessors.. Did you know the NLS (oN-Line System), "a revolutionary computer collaboration system developed in the 1960s", supported videoconferencing back in 1968? The whole Wikipedia article is wild! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NLS_(computer_system)

Latest acquisition: One of the first commercially available video telephones (this unit built in 1992, but I think the model is available 2-3 years longer). Apparently the "Telekom Bildtel 001" was built around a LOEWE MultiTel TV10 BTX terminal, plus an AEG/OLYMPIA codec unit and a TV camera.
