My dad was knocked off his motorcycle, just before his 80th birthday, by a car that went through a red traffic light. He had a month or so in hospital, several months immobile at home, the insurance took years and didn't cover the cost of getting a replacement Honda 90 (he thought they were hoping he'd die first so they wouldn't have to pay out), and the driver only got 3 points on their licence i.e. the driver who hit him would be able to do that four times before being stopped from driving.
