I am a deaf and disabled cis bi woman living in the UK. I am interested in disability rights practice and law, assistive technology, cats (always cats) and I am fuelled by lots of tea.

My profile picture is a red lizard for no reason other than I like it.

I worked with a blind mathematician at uni level.

We used LaTeX for our student which they accessed via Jaws or braille but had to strip macros out. Student could dictate LaTeX maths at speed. We also dug out an old Perkins brailler as more useful than duxbury or other software at times.

I retain an ongoing interest in access to maths for blind and partially sighted people.

I’m in my soaking tub on our terrace. It’s like an incredibly deep, circular bathtub with a tap and shower attachment. The water can be very hot if you want, but as the ambient temperature is 27° I only need it warm. It would be possible to do this naked as there are curtains you can close around the terrace for privacy, but then I wouldn’t be able to see the flowers and birds, so I’ve got my bikini on. Not that anyone can see me below the neck once I’m immersed, and hardly anyone passes by, but you never know and there is the question of getting in and out. There is so much we could be doing but we specifically selected a room with a secluded terrace so we would have an outdoor space to chill by ourselves and we’re both reading. Oh, and I did not go for a run around the resort. Nor did I go to the fitness suite and run on the treadmill. Instead I slept late and had brunch, but hey. I’m on holiday, right?

@michaelvcooper1 @Jyoti many of these countries were stripped of resources for hundreds of years. How quickly do you think they can 'stabilise' when there's been no reparations so they're trying to build from the stripped lower base.

Where there has been progressive governments, often colonising countries interfere and obstruct. Colonising countries don't want them to be developed (on whatever terms) or equal, they want to keep asset stripping without responsibility or recognition.

Lots of shouting and wailing about losing cash parking machines locally, but they are gradually going in favour phone pay. This means less clutter and less of a subsidy in running a cash system. Ofc, we don't get a proper reinstatement, but small steps.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@RantyHighwayman a friend's elderly mum is refusing to use apps or phone systems that she can't understand she's just running up parking tickets.

I am not especially pro motorist, but I think there should be a clear standard that doesn't require phones - such as contact less. Not everyone can follow complex registration and apps or even carries a phone with them .

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@quixoticgeek @RantyHighwayman yeah and councils do labelling all the time like that.

I think contact less is best.

I wonder how secure and not trackery parking apps are?

What's something you've made that got unexpectedly popular?

(Not necessarily hugely popular, but more than you thought it would.)

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@stefan I have public documents about two UK disability things : access to work, a government scheme for funding disability support at work and PIP, a non means tested disability benefit.

I get tagged or asked for the links a few times a week or with related queries I have usually already answered and can point people at.

My guide includes the stuff official orgs can't say about the unethical admin of both systems and their nasty tricks + possible strategies for avoiding the shit.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@stefan I figured it was what I as a lone disabled individual could sustain.

Where someone can't access my resource I encourage people to peer support one another given the deteriorating welfare support in the UK since 2010.

@JugglingWithEggs Notice the DWP spokesperson yaps about jobcoaches having discretion and and and. So covertly blaming individual staff rather than having a clear policy that "person who is in hospital is not fit to attend" whether that's psych or any other hospital.

I find threatening to take an Equality Act claim against named adviser and DWP as jointly and severally liable scares them out of shittery but not everyone has my legal knowledge and rage - and shouldn't have to!

@Garwboy Thanks for this thread, I've been uncomfortable about the suggestions about locking children out of parts of the Internet etc. Especially as a teen who did use the Internet to find LGBTQ+ stuff in the middish 90s.

A lot of people trying to use Brianna's case for agendas, not all legit.

Using an extreme case to lock down all young people. I work with uni students, some who are very immature on arrival about travelling or doing stuff cos they've been stifled, especially since Covid.

We had such a fun recharge break in our deep work session this morning. I learned that if you have a Mac, doing certain things with your hands on camera produces reactions in Zoom. So if you make a 🫶🏻, lots of ❤️ fly around. If you give a thumbs down 👎🏻 the screen darkens and it rains! Then we played with video filters, I turned myself into a plant creature with leaves coming out of my head and pink rosy cheeks. So silly, and a great way to break the work sessions up.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@purplepadma Also sadly undocumented and annoying if you are using sign language on Zoom for a call and it reacts to handshapes. I wouldn't mind it if it was documented, flagged up and could be turned off easily. (and off by default)

ND people are not exempt from being annoying, assholes, bigoted, ignorant of their privilege or benefitting from things like white supremacy.

https://disabled.social/@Sharksonaplane@mastodon.sandwich.net/111836246357760061

I put up with a lot of crap and spoon-vampiring from at least 2 former friends who were ND who acted like they had 1st dibs on disability-needs. Claiming they couldn't help it cos ND.

I then spent time with many better NDers who try hard not to fuckup and ask for clear-challenge if they behaved selfishly, hurt/annoy people.

What’s your best piece of relationship advice?

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@girlonthenet @NotTheLBCGuy Very much second this. A lot of chores feel neverending, having someone say "I notice you did X, thanks" means the time you didn't notice a job, partner is less likely to be upset.

Also adding to this, is the thing of saying "I did Y chore today" to the other, so the other can thank you - it is OK to expect to be thanked for doing a good household thing.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@amberage @girlonthenet partner and I call this regular sharing of the grudges database so it doesn't build-up, cos most of us do remember grudges whether you like it or not, but having it out sooner means they become less impossible

I'm really wary of automated plagiarism and invigilation/proctoring systems for assessments in education.

Here are some reasons why https://disabled.social/@183231bcb@transfem.social/111830123053792075

The companies selling this stuff are making big money convincing senior education institution management to buy it "We'll solve your big problems bingo!". Where I work, a v senior person claimed we should "just ban AI" cos clueless. Institutions rarely look for the downsides, cos someone promised an easy fix, box ticked.

English Uni 3, Dec 2020. 10am, go to IT, get laptop, log in, twiddle Windows/MS Office, all working.

English uni 2, May 2018, borrowing various laptops for a while (we were part uni part not uni), sometimes needed a full-time colleague to log in to make it speak to my login but generally worked straight off.

English uni 1, Aug 2008, immediate access on any Pc in the uni. I got a RAM upgrade in week 3 for 5 people by asking IT nicely for me and IT realised we all needed it.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@aardrian There's actual products which are 100x less clunky which pretty much achieve much of what that seems to (I'm guessing based on skimming the website video cos I can't parse French speech). OrCam is one example and various built-in options in iOS for sure.

Reinvented which is clunkier and probably more expensive too!

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@aardrian I can understand some VI folk want those kinds of features, but I'd be less sceptical if this was VI folk led.

I've been around long enough to be cynical about access hypes. Until proven otherwise, and a range legit target users confirm it, things like this are a hype.

I used to work with a blind guy who wasted hours of our mutual work time on exploring hypes which weren't even work-client-relevant. Our bosses didn't feel confident enough to challenge him until he got really cheeky.

NatalyaD,
@NatalyaD@disabled.social avatar

@aardrian I find dongle creators often don't even know what exists already and reinvent it which is what this feels like.

Maybe more useful for deafblind folk with the tactile stuff but also is the benefit better than good white cane training, perception skills and accessible infra etc? It often feels like this is a way to opt out of basic access by design.

Happened 3x this week. Locking out Windows personalisation and accessibility settings winds me the fuck up.

@RichardJMurphy on 'creating money out of thin air' which (despite what your #economics textbook tells you) is the everyday business of #banking....

When I used to run through these practices with my students (on my economics for non-economists UG course), they were at first shocked, but then realised the true importance of knowing this... there is a 'magic money tree' but its only shaken when the rich need some cash.
