i see an occasional quip that the masto overlords are moving toward insisting on being called The Mastodon™ Social Network and not having Their Name taken in vain. for other text-based fedi worlds – i have seen hometown, calckey, and friendica mentioned – do they have a more foss approach? each has features over masto, none seems quite as mature, but i'm concerned about having time for a controlled leap rather than a rapid unscheduled disassembly

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@pootriarch @TerryHancock many I have seen are mole hills made into mountains - but I’m always interested in knowing about them.

Is there something in particular you have seen about that? I wasn’t aware they were trying to centralize the brand

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@TerryHancock @pootriarch thank you. I’ve seen a lot of that, but I wanted to make sure there wasn’t more going on with the trademark!

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@pootriarch yes, absolutely. I will be worried if that ever comes about - but I think the masto team is smart enough to know that’s going to work like trying to float rocks.

A lot of the stuff I’ve seen has been a reaction to the default masto.social thing, so I was interested to hear about the trademark changes

I really want to lift up the mods of the SFBA instance: @cd24, @Ingurido, @jeffkibuule

I, a Black woman, have had a marvelous experience on Mastodon because these mods don't play. For being a place-specific instance, SFBA has a very clearly expressed value system and it's reflected in the mods. They are proactive, even-handed, and respectful.

I wish others on #BlackMastodon and through the #BlackFediverse could say the same of their instance mods.

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@timbray @DeliaChristina @Ingurido @jeffkibuule IMO it’s be better to have something like a tag where people can catalog good experiences and praise. we already have fediblock for the negative and it can be used inappropriately… I think it’s much harder to misuse praise!

New plant gay milestone: instead of cash in my wallet, today I opened it up to find a pack of spinach seeds

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@SeekingDuck I did! “Plant gay” as an affectionate term for a member of the alphabet family who is overly obsessed with plants (hello, hi, how are you?)

coolgrey, to random

I may use the term "tech guy" or "tech bro" to refer, in an obviously hostile way, to a certain group - even a class fraction, in the sociological rather than a C++ sense - active particularly in the Bay Area.

Do not mistake that for some "luddite" or hippie dippy hostility to (or even ignorance of) tech itself.

I was coding before most of you were born. I've worked in Silicon Valley. I've administered networks and posix systems. I used to have a server rack in my living room. I've done key signing parties (not to be confused with key parties).

I love people doing cool shit with computers, just not people doing bullshit with VC funding.

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@coolgrey I have, and remain, of the kind that the best technology isn’t always profitable - but it makes peoples lives better. I feel like this is heresy in the modern bay and it makes me a little sad.

It's been six months since Elon took over Twitter. I have some thoughts on the "Twitter diaspora" and the current decentralized alternatives: https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/28/six-months-in-thoughts-on-the-current-post-twitter-diaspora-options/

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@mmasnick I was glad to read about nostr here, I’ve been trying to understand it a bit better - but I still feel like I’ve missed some vital concepts. The simplicity seems useful, but it also seems that the central relay, client-driven system makes account spamming and harassment campaigns easier.

To be clear, it is definitely possible to do that here in AP land. However, standing up an instance with a new domain name is more difficult than creating a new accoun, so I’m curious if the folks at nostr have put energy into mitigations for these types of coordinated, malicious, attacks… but I’ve been unsuccessful in finding any writings about it.

coolgrey, to random

I still want SF Public Library to spin up a Mastodon server for SF-based non-profit arts organizations and artists or something.

I believe the future is here, in Fedispace, and it's a public and open future, and that has always been what SF Public Library has been to me since it became my home away from home in 3rd grade and on, until I went to college.

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@skinnylatte @castironflower @coolgrey you’re also more than welcome to recommend SFBA.social if folks want an easy start. We love the arts and would be delighted to have community art on here

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@coolgrey @skinnylatte @castironflower Very well could be, and there’s always the option of self-hosting at their own domain name as a form of verification for the accounts hosted there.

Reverse proxies arn't that hard to setup, and stuff like MastoHost and (now) Linode having turnkey solutions makes it a lot easier to self host for organizations like that.

I expect there'd probably be value in setting up a shared relay for the bay so smaller instances like that can still benefit from the larger ones.

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@coolgrey @skinnylatte @castironflower Lemme ask a follow up then; would it be better to have an "arts focused" instance run another fedi software like... say, PixelFed?

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@coolgrey @skinnylatte @castironflower We're always interested in hearing about proposals!

Write something up and start a DM with the whole team. We are happy to talk about it (subdomains even have a section on the landing page of the hub: https://hub.sfba.social/).

Unless you means something like sfba.camera ;)

Frankly rude for this article about low Covid numbers to come out as I'm sitting at home with my first case of Covid, which I acquired out of thin air after 3+ years of precautions:

cd24,

@inkfish I was just thinking that. I had a mysterious case a few weeks ago… just finally recovering.

tgammet, to random

The biggest hurdle here so far is finding anyone I was following already on what I considered a very well curated list. Either I can’t find them or they are not on this platform. Either way rebuilding is tough. How are you handling it?

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@tgammet it can be slow! I tried to bring over my old network… and I failed to get everyone. However, after scrolling the federated/local timeline a while I managed to find people who had cool and interesting things to say - and I have found it really enjoyable to engage with them.

If you’re looking for a “jumpstart” that discovery process, you may wanna check out these recommended follows from @spreadmastodon: https://follows.spreadmastodon.org

That said, I have managed to get a fair number of IRL friends over here and that improved my TL a lot.

I’m very excited to see the discussion for the @Mastodon post migration issue has picked back up. This is probably the single largest gap between rhetoric and reality on .

It’s anecdata, but every singe person I mention account migration to immediately asks “oh, so my posts can move with me.” This is, unfortunately, immidiately followed up with disappointment that their posts stay behind. Coupled with the recent push to make mastodon.social the default for the iOS app… we need a way for users to move around SEAMLESSLY. We can make all the technical excuses we want, but if the process doesn’t work it’s not really account migration.

Until we have post support, we should probably say we have “social graph” migration, not “account migration,” or we’re really just lying and setting up people to be let down.

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/12423

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@luciedigitalni That's a perfectly good way to use the platform! However, I am optimistic it doesn’t need to be the only way to use it

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@FediThing @Mastodon Yes, and it’s often framed in the context of servers going offline (like mastodon.lol recently, or any number of smaller servers all the time). One of the big migration use cases is a server closing, and this frame leaves that use case unaddressed.

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@FediThing there absolutely will be complexity, and I’m under no delusions that this is a “snap and it’s done” feature. Which is why I’m glad the issue seems to be active.

But that’s all the more reason to prioritize it. This is a sticking point for a lot of people I know. With the push to join m.s first, we’re going to end up trapping a lot of folks there because they won’t want to move without their content. It’s unintuitive behavior. Drawing a physical parallel, we’re asking people to leave their house full of all their things and just move with the clothes on their back to another state. “You’ll buy new stuff when you get to your new home,” does nothing for the pain for the things left behind. This isn’t everyone’s experience, but it is how a lot of people I know feel.

To a user that doesn’t understand the technical difficulty, it feels like an incomplete/broken platform. I should know, my partner said nearly those exact words.

All to say, IMO it’s worth the work to solve those problems.

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@mcdanlj @Mastodon agreed. I think defaults are fine, as long as there’s a way to change it later. Being able to pickup and move (even via export/import) would be an incredible win.

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@Korgdisso I don't really vibe with gate keeping as a ‘protective’ measure. I think the internet, and fedi, should be accessible to everyone.

This mindset is giving me the vibe of a wealthy suburb that doesn't want a public transit line because it'll "bring in the rabble.”

cd24,
@cd24@sfba.social avatar

@luciedigitalni @khoji @Mastodon this is not the answer to everything. There is no way to host your own masto instance and turn on this feature. You’d have to write your own AP platform, which is not a reasonable reply to feature requests - even if possible.
