@sarajw ah got it. I was thinking like it needs some special hardware to run everything on-device, but I guess there's still a chance to override that and force-enable it.

I'm running Win11 on virtual machine, so been waiting for it to appear (besides all the fancy ads in the Start menu) 🫠

The "Catch up on this thread" notifications on are pretty annoying.

It seems trying to notify you a post from a following that you missed, buried under the chronological Following timeline but not going to be resurfaced by the algorithm in the 'For You' timeline 🤔

Interesting, there's experimental local alt text generation in Firefox Nightly https://hacks.mozilla.org/2024/05/experimenting-with-local-alt-text-generation-in-firefox-nightly/

In short: DistilGPT-2 model in Transformers.js, trained on updated Flickr30k dataset with supervised learning.

The copy used is also interesting: "Alt text (alternative text) helps when people can't see the image or when it doesn't load."

Saw the news about artists on IG flocking to Cara. Decided to try it out and saw this Home Feed settings that allow users to customize percentage of posts based on different categories to show up on the home feed.

Not sure how the percentage adds up tho'. Restarting the app resets the percentage values, perhaps buggy now due to too much traffic (went up 300K users).

Is there a hint as to how the post/reply language thing works?

To me it seems it's set by default by the OP for the whole thread, and if it's a German OP their posts are set to German whether they are typing German or English or other languages. This is fine - but my replies to them are automatically marked as German too.

@sarajw yeah, it follows the language set by the post you're replying to. This behaviour is copied from Mastodon, though I've been thinking of looking into it, if it actually makes sense for most people or we could have better heuristics 🤔

@sarajw hmm, this is a tough one.

Some folks forgot to change their language when replying in a different language. Some is due to their client not surfacing the language prominently enough. Phanpy kinda "expose" these mistakes by showing the 'Translate from [language]" button. The problem escalates further if the whole nested replies are filled with wrongly tagged (mixed?) languages. The authors could've gone back & edit their posts, change to the correct language if their clients expose them.

@kizu @sarajw Phanpy actually does this unobtrusive way, but only if the language set is different than the one in previous composing session.

@cheeaun When minimising the compose window, would it be possible to fade out the background first before the shrink animation? It's quite jarring on dark mode, with the entire background shrinking.
