I love this kind of music: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvL3SharHGKut2spUcOB0zvHW0zYLadhd

And while I didn't add the letters ADHD to the end of the music playlits, I do have ADHD. Unmanaged RSD caused a lot of problems in my life: working on it.

@anildash @cabel nah, despite your weak assurances an Apple password app would likely monopolize password managers (and leave Windows users without a good one as a side effect).

Just use Bitwarden.

I went to vote today for local and EU representatives. And while you might think, I know nothing about Maltese politics, that is certainly true but what I vote for is democratically elected representatives to work together, even on a European scale. That we pool our resources together to keep systemic poverty away because we know where that leads. I vote for the beach to be for children playing and not soldiers landing as they did eighty years ago. I vote to refuse Russia meddling in democracy.

Yes, abusive husbands will opt in. Where's the answer to that?

Something for the "falsehoods programmers believe about addresses" list: the UPU has complete rules per country. They don't. When I looked up the postcode for my apartment in Malta, the Maltese Post shows an address which contains more info than the UPU uses. The apartment deed uses even more lines for the address, mind you.

How did those men, many barely more than boys find the courage to do what they did. I can't even imagine. Yet, I wouldn't be here if not for them -- both of my grandmothers were concentration camp survivors.

No matter how hard you work, you're a lazy piece of crap compared to how hard "simply" is working in this sentence.

If you suggest an AWS region migration is simple, you should be caught with a net.

People can tell themselves whatever lie they want about not voting for Biden. It still amounts to a lack of maturity in thinking opting out sends a message, of empathy for those who will suffer under Trump, and of logic for the stakes in 2024.

Read about Project 2025 and decide if you want to vote to unleash that on the nation and world. Because not voting is still a vote--a vote that says the world can burn unless you get everything you want. Decide which side you're on.

chx,

@augieray I think people need to emphasize more: yes, it's a mistake, more, an error to run Biden but this is the hand we are dealt and there's no choice. Not voting for Biden means the end of the United States as we know it.

chx,

@augieray I think people need to emphasize more: neither party can win at this point. Let me explain. The voters are already decided whether the one they would vote for is Trump or Biden. There's not a single soul who will sit down to watch the presidential debates with a mindset of "I do not know which one to pick, I will decide based on this show". The only question is, which side loses more voters from here to November.

chx, to random

It is so hard to decide whom to vote for next weekend for the EU.

One party platform has the politician who has ushered in the unified USB C charger in the EU, two former union leaders, a former head of green projects who oversaw €700M on €81000 salary.

The other party fields a corrupt politician who built a villa pretending to be a sheep farm, another who dismissed European attempts to enshrine abortion as a fundamental right as “bollocks”...

Choices, choices.

I think my favorite program in the entire linux/unix toolchain is "file". Did you even know about this program? It's on every system including MacOS and it's magic. You run it on any file and it just tells you what it is. Any file. I don't know who keeps this updated but it supports surprising things. Like it knows Windows file formats. If it's a executable it tells you if it's 32- or 64- bit. If it's an image it tells you the size and channels. If the file extension lies it just figures it out.

chx,

@mcc https://www.darwinsys.com/file/ now you know who keeps it updated. There's a bunch of contributors but the commits are done by Christos Zoulas of NetBSD fame: he is part of the NetBSD Core Group and the NetBSD Foundation leadership.

so far "How Git Works" has sold more on its first day than any other zine except "The Pocket Guide to Debugging" and it's only been 3 hours https://wizardzines.com/zines/git/

appreciate you all, hope the zine helps with your git woes ❤

chx,

@b0rk you are an excellent explainer and git desperately needs a good explanation. Desperately.

I had the luck to find a tutorial like a decade ago which helped me tremendously but I have a math degree soooooo that's probably not fit for 99% of the people :)

chx,

@b0rk Ps as an aside: a math degree doesn't mean I understand the sentence "A monad is just a monoid in the category of endofunctors "

chx,

@b0rk as long as long it doesn't call the git repo a directed acyclic graph you are good :) (and it doesn't, I beta read it.)

It's fine if they are, I'm just really trying to find quality people to be friends with, so I thought I'd ask you, is your kid a dick?

Wait, don't get offended! How are people supposed to know whether to hang out with your kid if you can't answer a simple question?!

@hazelweakly they make me do a mandatory security training every year. I was the first security team lead of the Drupal project in 2005 -- and I started dabbling in computer security more than a decade before that. Aaaaaargh.

chx,

@ricmac @pluralistic @judell I have a USB pen with the entire archive of the Hungarian Chip Magazine. It was the leading magazine in the country for more than a decade and I think it's not available in a searchable format anywhere. However, CHIP Holding GmbH holds the copyright despite I doubt they have the archive either -- the parting between the Hungarian magazine and the German parent was extremely adversarial.

Well, color me very confused. In a CPU bound workload two cores on the same socket have substantially different performance (32% slowdown). If I just migrate the running process between the cores, performance changes immediately.

This is on 2x Xeon 5215 system.

I checked that it's not thermals, cpu frequency/boost and the system is idle.

Here's the odd part: The biggest difference evident in perf counters is
a 2.5x difference in icache_64b.iftag_stall, with ~same icache_64b.iftag_miss.

Pittsburgh had a mask requirement.

Lille didn't.

I am sure there were many other factors but apparently a prominent Drupal company owned by an anti-vaxxer (while he haven't posted much on his views, his wife had been an anti vaxxer many years before covid) put financial pressure on the Drupal Association to drop mask requirements by withdrawing his company from Pittsburgh because of mask mandates.
