Hi all! My first "neuro-focused" post 🧠 has to be these beautiful that I recorded in a foraging for cocops in a rectangle.

⏬(trying this out)

What are "place cells"? They are a category of neurons, first discovered in the brain of rats, that activate only in specific locations in a given environment. Each place cell fires at a different location, together forming a sort of map () of all the locations that we know.

plot legend is described in the alt-text

This screenshot show similar data as the other plot, but speed-filtered (only data when the rat was moving and not resting) and in the form of a rate map, where high firing rate (spikes / second) in a given location is shown as red and low firing is shown as blue. Note how each cell has its own specific region of high-firing with a variety of sizes and shapes and locations of that region (called the 'place field').

I will be presenting this poster on tomorrow (Wed 15th Nov) at !

I'm also uploading the poster as an image here, and it's on the SFN website: https://cattendee.abstractsonline.com/meeting/10892/presentation/33535
you can ask questions in the chat there (I'll check it regularly as long as the poster is up, but probably not tomorrow). Little summary below:

Our goal was to investigate if replay of hippocampal was indeed reflecting immediate .

The existing literature is a little unclear: some studies find 'planning replay' and some do not. Most of the time, planning is not dissociated from reward consumption in these studies as they can generally be simplified to an alternation between two rewarded locations. In our case, we separate the location of planning from the location of reward and focus on replay happening at the planning time.

At the location of planning, we find that:

  1. there is actually almost no replay at the time of planning
  2. the rare 'start replay' events do NOT over-represent the future trajectory, or even the goal
  3. the rare 'start replay' events do not differ for successful vs unsuccessful planning.

At the goal location, we find that:

  1. Many replays occur at the goal, even before the reward delivery!
  2. 'goal replays' strongly over-represent the goal (either before or after reward delivery)
  3. 'goal replays' do not over-represent the current trajectory compared to the alternative trajectory, or even the optimal path if the less-optimal path was taken
  4. 'goal replays' were strongly affected by errors and were quasi-absent during error trials (choosing an unrewarded end box)

In conclusion:

Reward (received or expected), but not planning, drives hippocampal replay!

Let me know if you have any questions after looking at the poster :D

question:

What is the smallest optimal distance between independent in dorsal CA1 (so that you don’t record from the same neuron in adjacent tetrodes and also movement of one doesn’t influence the movement of others)?
Say, using 12.7 μm diameter wire?

In discussions I realized people can have very different definitions of “planning”.

Can we try an experiment? Without looking it up (answers to this post included), can you write down the first definition of “planning” that comes to mind, and then write down your research specialty (if you are a researcher) at the end? There are no wrong answers and anyone can contribute! 🙏

What do who record raw data from many channels (, …) do for data backup and storage? I just bought 2 x 4Tb external drives and it looks like they won’t be enough (at all). Is there a cheap and reliable AND huge storage way to do this?
