@writers @writing @writingcommunity @NickEast @sciencefiction I’d assume that it’s kind of pointless to try to find “the first” as it’s pretty unlikely that people have never imagined and told stories about what the future might be like before a certain point.

enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@writing @writers @NickEast @sciencefiction @writingcommunity and even with genres that are somewhat more new there are often many people who never got well known who preceded the well-known works that popularize the concept of the genre

Antique clothes are so small not because people were smaller but because the extra small clothes were worn less so they survived.

enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs huh, I thought it was because a lot of people were malnourished

enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs it must’ve been to some extent that people were just a bit smaller, because even full suits of plate armor tended to be smaller than what most people nowadays would need, and that can’t exactly be explained by any of those things. So I think it’s probably a combination of all of these. But that’s just what I think might’ve been the case, I’m not an expert and this should be taken with a large grain of salt

If there was no internet, and no power, would you still have your work/art? Or would it be gone?

enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs depends, my drawings are not digital, but most of my creative writing is only digital.

Fun fact: the hardest thing about #synthDIY and DIY electronics is not soldering (takes practice but most folks can do it) or knowing how electronics work (a lot of it can be approached like building LEGO or following a recipe).

The hardest part about DIY electronics is the fit and finish. (Not even aesthetics or an intuitive UI, though that’s all hard too!)

Just getting it all in a box such that it’s enjoyable to use and not in danger of falling apart.

enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@symmetrizer @jepyang so like with coding (I’ve spent so much time in utter despair trying to find out why my thing doesn’t work, only to realize I’ve made a slight typo somewhere). I feel like if debugging code is already this frustrating, troubleshooting diy electronics must be on a whole other level.

Not that long ago, I posted that I although I am an atheist, I am personally uncomfortable trying to push atheism on anyone. It doesn’t bother me if other people have found ideas that help get them through a life that is often confusing, scary, and hard.

Now, this triggered a bunch of atheism bros, who tried to convince me that this was a grave mistake and that society desperately needs more atheism bros to save people from their pathetically comforting delusions.

I blocked a bunch of them, because they lived up to everything that made me uncomfortable about proselytizing atheism and didn’t respect boundaries.

I don’t regret that at all, but something about that experience has been niggling at my brain.

@HeavenlyPossum does the animal care if we thank it or not? It didn’t want to die either way.

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs it’s such a good fantasy novel, it has court intrigue, dragons, lesbians, and generally many very well written female characters. It has a prequel which I still haven’t read. Can only recommend!!

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I’ve never watched it but from what you described I feel like there’s such a missed opportunity there too, because pet furniture doesn’t have to look bad, like having a wall with a lot of stuff for a cat to walk on can look pretty good actually. Especially with a budget like a TV show you could easily get pet furniture that looks very nice!!

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs this kind of reminds me of rabbit hutches, back when my bunnies were still around they loved their hutch, it was their safest area to retreat to, it was where they ran when they heard something scary, after thumping. But many people keep bunnies with a hutch not as part of a much larger area for them to inhabit, but instead keep them locked up in there routinely (often even all of the time), and that’s absolutely horrible (I suspect that the reason why this is so often seen as the way to keep rabbits is that it stems from their usage (abuse) in meat or fur farming, but this is just a suspicion I have, take this with a shit ton of salt). I wish people used things like kennels or hutches as dens/warrens (places for them to retreat to) for animals rather than cages (places to lock them up in).

I switched to a physical planner where I keep everything: family and work schedules, to-do lists, keeping track of everything, etc. I'm too tactile of a person to use apps and screens. This is way better.

    enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@ItsTrainingCatsAndDogs I’ve wanted to do that for years now, sadly i haven’t found a planner that’s right for me yet.

Let’s talk tags on clothing. I hate them and they annoy me to no end. And even if I cut them off, the tiny bit remaining always manages to touch me and I hate it. 😩

    Do tags bother you?

    image: unknown

    enby_of_the_apocalypse,

@actuallyautistic @autism101 my life became so much better when I realized that a lot (sadly not all) tags are sown on top of the seams that keep the clothing together with their own little seam, so if you’re careful and make sure to look closely if this is really the case and to distinguish the two seams you can just cut the stitches and completely remove them with a seamripper or if you don’t have one and are very careful/ok with it being a little finicky the tip of a sharp, narrow knife.
