I’m very sympathetic to criticism that many of Apple’s policies around the App Store and some of its products are anti-user and anti-developer. Some of them absolutely are. I’m not convinced that that’s something that should be illegal. Otherwise, please explain the existence of Nintendo.

Here’s the thing, when the DoJ goes after companies for things other than monopolies, it can often win. Apple did break the law when it tried to do price fixing for ebooks. It straight up did that. It also colluded with other big tech companies to depress salaries. Those settlements made sense b/c like, yeah, those laws were clearly broken. But without seeing the full docs, being mad that Apple has private APIs it hoarded for itself is such a weird thing to spend 5 years investigating.

Interesting report from @markgurman https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-18/apple-in-talks-to-license-google-gemini-for-iphone-ios-18-generative-ai-tools - on the surface, it certainly seems to indicate Apple’s internal LLM models are behind of they are meeting with third-parties, but maybe this would just augment the internal stuff and make a better-rounded product. That’s un-Apple-like but would be smart IMHO. Regardless, I have to assume any LLM not built in-house will be significantly fine-tuned. Let’s just hope whatever they pick gives a better demo than Siri circa 2011.

Hey @jsnell - really appreciated your Samsung S9 5K monitor review. I totally understand why you returned it, given its price point. If you could get one for $700 or so, would that change your calculus? I’m happy with my Studio Display even if I think it’s overpriced but I want a second 5K screen for my M-series machines and can get the S9 on sale.
