Me and @ttscoff and @forestofthings just had the most amazing and epic 2+ hour with @merlinmann

This is the exact problem. Me, the girl who will buy any stupid-as-fuck gadget & who will also buy a super pricey laptop b/c of the color (and considered replacing her $1800 chair with an identical model in a different color — sanity prevailed there) said “nah fam, I’m good” on the Vision Pro. This is a very clear sales and marketing failure because even the smallest amount of effort would have me buying this. And yet my FOMO is oddly nonexistent

I genuinely hope everyone who gets a Vision Pro loves it. I hope my initial misgivings about it are wrong and that a use case presents itself immediately. But I dunno man. It’s like I said the other week: this is a dev kit that is being positioned as a consumer gadget and I just haven’t been “sold” yet.

I love nothing more than to spend money on useless shit, but I need to be sold. And so far, I haven’t been sold.

No, I did not pre-order a Vision Pro. It’s $3899 for the 1TB option, $500 for Apple Care+, then there is 10% tax. So if I don’t get any accessories like a case or battery clip, I’m at $4848 just for the headset. And I haven’t even tried it yet. No thank you. I might have FOMO, but I’m not into throwing that much money towards the unknown.

This is the first time since probably 2008 (for iPod touch 2nd gen, the good one) that I haven’t been a day one new Apple device person but you know what, I’m fine waiting. It isn’t even the money. I could buy it with cash no problem. But it’s the principle of not having a way to test it in advance and no clear use case that has me concerned. A friend did get one and I’ll try hers out on the 2nd and I might have FOMO, but like, I gotta be honest, I haven’t been sold on it yet.

Interesting re: Vision Pro availability. So at 10am PT (5 hours after launch), orders would ship mid-March and there were no in-store pickup options. I just checked and shipping is still mid-March but I’ve got in-store options as soon as Feb 3 depending on how far I want to go. The closest store to me says Feb 7. Granted, this could be different in 2 weeks but for now, if I had FOMO, I could get one in Tacoma the day after release.

Speaking of essential reading, this from @gruber https://daringfireball.net/2024/01/coming_to_grips_with_apples_seemingly_unshakable_sense_of_app_store_entitlement and this link roundup from @mjtsai https://mjtsai.com/blog/2024/01/18/storekit-purchase-link-entitlement-for-united-states/ are also must-reads. I cannot believe Apple is going to charge a 27% tax so developers can link to their homepage. I’m generally pretty meh on a lot of tech regulation if only b/c I think most government officials are idiots and it often doesn’t actually work. But this sort of move should be illegal. Full stop. It isn’t. But it should be.

Revenge of the devs? Honestly, what a week to make the decisions Apple has made with regards to following the court order. Jesus Christ. https://mastodon.macstories.net/@viticci/111777851523787805

I agree with @gruber that this is a corporate pissing match, but I also understand not dedicating engineering resources (any of them) to a $3500 dev kit masked as a consumer product (it prob will be a consumer product but it won’t be at launch) at launch. Especially when the company who makes said dev kit has gone out of its way to undermine your business. Apple TV+ isn’t on the Meta Quest, for example, outside of the browser. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-01-17/watching-netflix-on-apple-vision-pro-you-ll-have-to-use-the-web

I’m not saying an earlier embracement of PWAs would have made some of this lack of native VisionOS apps story moot but I’m not not saying it. Safari 17 is a lot better with PWAs than the past but devs haven’t even seen Safari or PWAs as a potential solution for years and years now. And that isn’t the devs fault.

Like @drdrang, I go through considering this at least every 18 - 24 months. Fortunately, I’m too ADHD and too emacs averse to actually follow-through. But the temptation never leaves. https://mastodon.social/@hotdogsladies/111738442011341619

This story is just wild from beginning to end. ESPN didn’t like Emmy rules so it made up names of producers so it could get trophies for the on-air talent ineligible for winning awards. Wild! https://theathletic.com/5193316/2024/01/11/espn-emmys-fake-names-college-gameday/

I know we’re only 9 days in but we’ve already got a contender for the second-most psychotic article of 2024 (first is the insane Gaylor story in the New York Times). What the fuck even is this?! https://variety.com/2024/awards/opinion/why-music-for-may-december-viral-hot-dog-scene-is-problematic-1235866494/

Here is my continued discomfort with the Apple Vision Pro and how its announcement/roll-out has gone: In every single way, this is a dev kit, which I think is completely valid and is the proper positioning for a device like this at this stage. But Apple, while somewhat positioning it like a dev kit in terms of price/release/how it can be tried out, continues to market this as a direct to consumer device. You cannot be both, and I cannot stress this enough. You cannot be both.

I will say, like @stroughtonsmith, I have concerns about the lack of an Apple event around Vision Pro and the seeming "drop it with a press release" nature of the release. For a brand new product category, that raises a lot of questions.

Do we know if we'll be allowed to finance the Apple Vision Pro via Apple Card? I'm still not sure if I'm getting this and I def could buy it outright (but why bother if you have 0% interest as an option) but I also just spent $6k on a MBP so… https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2024/01/apple-vision-pro-available-in-the-us-on-february-2/

I still can’t believe the New York Times went full Gaylor in an absolutely unhinged 5000 word essay the week after my long-running podcast ended. It’s the ultimate Rocket Rule.

I can sort of see the iMessage argument since Apple subsumes SMS or whatever on iOS HOWEVER Apple Watch requiring an iPhone and Apple requiring its internal payment tech for Apple Pay are not things that strike me as antitrust but classic and legal vertical integration. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/05/technology/antitrust-apple-lawsuit-us.html
