In honor of Steve Albini I will listen to nothing but Steely Dan and the today. There's nothing more than not giving a fuck about some famous asshole's opinions.

@mrcompletely Yes! As Rob Sheffield put it in his brilliant obituary of Albini, “his whole point was, whatever it is you love, go ahead and be an irresponsible asshole fanatic about it.”

Young Steve at his grumpiest: "Three Pandering Sluts and Their Music-Press Stooge" (January 27, 1994), where he takes on Liz Phair, Urge Overkill and the Smashing Pumpkins via @hitsville's year-in-rock recap for the Chicago Reader.

My favorite dig is referring to Urge Overkill and Oingo Boingo as "Weiners in suits playing frat party rock."

Albini’s greatest achievement may have been his acknowledgment and apology for his previous asshole behavior: https://twitter.com/electricalWSOP/status/1448050174614392832?s=20

That twitter thread shows how a grownup can take accountability for being a dumbass as a young person.

It never ceases to amaze me that was considered such a goofy, comical novelty act for covering songs that were 15 years old. "Get a Job" by the was a #1 record in 1958.

This would be the equivalent of somebody today covering Lady Gaga's "Poker Face."

When played in 1969, the oldest song in their set list was 12 years old. And the newest one ("Wipe-Out") was only SIX years old!

  1. Get a Job (1958)
  2. Come Go with Me (1957)
  3. Sihouettes (1957)
  4. Teen Angel (1960)
  5. His Latest Flame (1961)
  6. Wipe Out (1963)
  7. Book of Love (1958)
  8. Teenager in Love (1959)
  9. Little Darlin' (1957)
  10. At the Hop (1958)
  11. Duke of Earl (1962)

Dead Milkmen: "In Praise of Sha Na Na"

"You can move to Montana and listen to Santana but you still won't be as cool as Sha Na Na."

@mrcompletely Sure but the “scene” they were parodying was, like, only about 10 years earlier. Can you imagine an act today parodying a band from 2014?

gloriousnoise,
@gloriousnoise@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Yeah I think the closest thing we’ve come to Sha Na Na recently is The Darkness or Steel Panther sort of making fun of/celebrating hair metal?

gloriousnoise,
@gloriousnoise@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely Yes! And on top of that their live version of "At the Hop" from Woodstock is as punk as anything the MC5 or the Stooges were doing in 1969.

Finally figured out what specifically the infamously absurd NOOOOO from Vader at the end of the Sith movie reminds me of - it's been bugging me since it first came out. It's got the same enunciation twist at the start of the o sound as the fake (?) Lorne Michaels voice saying "come back with my show" at the start of Robert Smigel's TV Funhouse bits. My overly developed powers of free association strike again

Video: Orville Peck & Willie Nelson - “Cowboys Are Frequently Secretly Fond Of Each Other”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BirJMnMcfBs

Directed by Ben Prince. From Stampede, coming soon on Warner Bros.

Orville Peck is a phony. He’s about as “country” as Elon Musk…although Peck looks way better in a cowboy hat. He’s a phony, but he’s a real phony. You can tell he believes his own bullshit...

One more post specifically intended to ingratiate myself with my new instance: My son recently joined his high school rugby team. In addition to being good for his health, teamwork, sportsmanship, etc., the thing I’m most excited about is the team logo. And yes, I ordered a t-shirt for myself!
