@thesizzler yep I listened to most of it at the gym. I could listen to Steve Brown all day. Guy seems like a top tier hang even without the legendary collection of stuff

@wharf_rat shady characters, allusion to back room deals gone wrong, overly confident losers of every type, femmes fatale and so on - their lyrical universes overlap heavily in the "counter culture cautionary tale" zone.

@wharf_rat I'm here for it. Willie already did the only sincere Stella cover we'll ever need, by all means let's explore a wider range

ok yeah after using the new sonos app for about half a day, i can definitively say it’s way worse than the old one lol. remember that design is more than making it look pretty. remember that design includes functionality. remember that bad implementation breaks good design

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@exchgr a sonos using friend pointed out that the basis of their success is they're an "it's simple and just works" solution for people that don't want to gearhead their audio. It's a doubly bad release for that kind of company

I guess it also broke a few key integrations

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@exchgr for a company like that this is extra troubling to anyone in the biz bc it suggests product management has lost the plot. You don't really worry until they've borked a few in a row, but it's kind of a yellow alert

Old and blazingly white take coming:

Kendrick always had better flow but Drake has producers, pace, and beats to make you run through a brick wall.

Kdot is weirder, which would be a plus in any other genre of music but rap, which I like straight-on, hard, & boom-bap, because I grew up on 90s East Coast rap.

Kendrick is more authentic & angry in these diss tracks. He's vicious, honestly, maybe too much. Drake seems like he's putting on airs (and he is, I mean... DeGrassi).

Kdot is winning.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Rosey my zag take is that the whole thing is tedious, contrived bullshit and none of the tracks have lasting merit. Which is par for the course for Drake, the Ed Sheeran of rap, but should be beneath Kendrick according to his persona, which reads as increasingly false. So from him it's disappointing though he's been sounding old for awhile. In fact they're both getting old and are desperate to maintain relevance imo. Of course kdot is winning, he's easily the best rapper of his generation

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@Rosey oh I don't mean contrived in that sense, I think there's real dislike at the heart of it. But there's also a deep silliness to two grown men writing mean poems about each other

@paninid the survival of the earth biosphere and the evolution of the human spirit. The freedom for everyone to experience joy, safety and fun in this one precious human lifetime.

I don't have concise answers to the other two. "Lots of stuff."

Just a heads up. Don’t update your Sonos app. In addition to the below, it bricks music services like Nugs and LivePhish. Also, can’t seem to set up new speakers. Truly a mess.

Using just your ears, what year is this Dark Star passage from?

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics that's hilarious, I was skipping through that run last night. Holy smokes there's some good playing

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics it's fun timing for the post bc I'm finally going thru and pulling together my fav jam segments of that year plus some other highlights. My general take is that, 6.9 aside, the June tour improves as it goes and I wish we had better/more complete tape of fall, bc it's a very creative tour. June is spent honing songs and combos (HSF, PITB/wheel, Stephen/NFA) & then fall deconstructs that & plays with cool segues and quick jamlets. Would love a 7.13 upgrade for the perfect Crazy Fingers

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics like, the HSFs improve over the course of June, getting tighter and cooler with almost every version, with the last few takes being mostly excellent, approaching canonical. Then on fall tour thru NYE you get split Slipknots with other stuff in the middle. That difference is emblematic of the overall dynamic

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics I don't think I have anything that's not on there

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics yep for sure

too bad there's still no SBD upgrade on 8/2 though at least a couple of the AUDs are okay. Both those jams are among the coolest, especially the second one

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@4CPcomics which one? I find the June one tedious, but the Orpheum one is pretty good

Young Steve at his grumpiest: "Three Pandering Sluts and Their Music-Press Stooge" (January 27, 1994), where he takes on Liz Phair, Urge Overkill and the Smashing Pumpkins via @hitsville's year-in-rock recap for the Chicago Reader.

My favorite dig is referring to Urge Overkill and Oingo Boingo as "Weiners in suits playing frat party rock."
