I bought all these heavy mirrors at thrift stores and mounted them throughout my apartment for use after my (now cancelled) FFS. But now they’re still up –and I can’t get them down – making my home into a, like, dysphoria simulator for Microsoft Kinect

maintenance today. My HP 7585B stopped responding over RS-232. Diagnostics revealed a problem with the interface card. Luckily I have a spare machine that can donate a new working card!

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@paulrickards it was so satisfying watching it draw!

I was reminded of these Create-A-Card kiosks in some stores in the 90s that let you build your own greeting card, and then a plotter printer would draw the card at the end for you.

What would be the downside if they just let the Instagram app run on macOS? It would certainly solve all of my issues with live streaming to it or filming Reels.

I hate that so many companies who are never going to make a native Mac app won't let us run their iOS apps on our Apple Silicon Macintosh computers.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@collin my favorite is when they’re like “well we are worried it’ll be a bad experience”

My friend I’ve seen your iOS app. It doesn’t seem like that’s a major concern of yours as it is.

@rileytestut it would be really cool if Delta integrated with some of the storefronts that sell recently released ROMs.

I'd love to see that prove out the business opportunity for companies to dig out their old IP and offer it up.

If Apple didn’t already have iWork, Final Cut, or Logic, would they make them now? Kind of hard to imagine that kind of investment in new software from them. What even comes close in the last fifteen years?

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@collin Freeform feels to me like something that will steadily get some modest investment in the coming years and grow in usefulness.

Considering ways to organize lyrics, recordings etc that is low friction, keeps everything together, and is easy to search and organize. Has to sync with native apps.

Apple Notes excels in being low friction, but the tagging is not ideal and once I start including other files, the whole thing gets unwieldy.

Filesystem is appealing. I can put everything into a folder per song, but tagging is out the window, and it’s annoying on mobile.

I could make my own app, but I shouldn’t.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@collin tagging isn’t totally out of the question! Files in Finder and the Files app both support tags.

I’m not sure how extensively you plan to tag but I’m guessing if you don’t try to do something like dozens of tags per file you would be okay.

As I get more curmudgeonly the more I like plain old files 😄

Just realized that watching Paris make all these last minute improvements in anticipation of hosting the Olympics is deeply relatable because I, too, frantically try to get my place in order when I’m expecting guests shortly.

I find it sad that our industry has trained so many people to expect that a free trial is going to automatically convert into some sort of payment when the trial ends, unless they somehow cancel the trial.

(In all of our apps at @OmniGroup, the trial simply ends and you're no longer able to edit content unless/until you decide to unlock the app by making a purchase. There's nothing you need to cancel. And you can still view any content you created during the trial.)

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@kcase I love this!

I seriously don't understand why there's such pressure to collect payment info up front. If a software/service earned its keep then I'm going to want to give them money as soon as the trial is up.

The only functional difference is that maybe you get to collect some money from people who forgot to cancel, and to optimize around that is deeply sleazy to me.

PSA/rant: I know the word "permutations" sounds fancy and you might be tempted to use it, but well over 90% of the time I hear it, the person meant "combinations”.

If you have a set of things and there are different ways they can be mixed/combined, those are combinations.

If the order of those things in a set matters, then you have permutations!

Today's mood: journalists gleefully reporting on the Apple leaker story while also simultaneously having like ten of their own sources doing the exact same thing just to feed them information.

Take care to filter the ‘homeboys’ from the hyenas

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @waynedixon agreed that communicating with the journalist on your work issued phone was dumb, but what did Apple specifically do to get this data from an iPhone?

If it were a Mac, sure, all bets are off because an MDM can install anything and some other app can grab Signal’s data. But on iOS apps can’t read into each other’s sandboxes so what did Apple do to grab these chat logs? Does the MDM give the device owner that much visibility?

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @freediverx @waynedixon yeah, my hope is it's closer to the “he was compelled to hand over his passcode and they exported data” scenario. It would surprise me to know that Apple issues backdoored versions of iOS that allow them to peek into their devices.

Forensic tools would make sense too, but it feels kind of dirty that Apple would use such tools instead of trying to patch up whatever vulnerabilities those tools exploit.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @freediverx @waynedixon oh, yeah, deleted apps do leave data behind sometimes; I would have thought Signal had a better way of making that information not retrievable, especially on app deletion.

Apple's not in the wrong here or anything but their willingness to potentially trash their reputation as a maker of privacy-first devices to win this fight feels... stubborn.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @freediverx @waynedixon given how defiant Apple was about giving the FBI a special build of iOS that removed the lockout limit, it would surprise me a bit that they'd have a build of iOS floating around that plays fast and loose with app sandboxes and such.

If I was this dude's legal team I'd be angling to turn this into a privacy PR disaster for Apple, just to get Apple to drop the case to get them to keep their mouths shut.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl @freediverx @waynedixon the fact that he also took screenshots is <chef's kiss>

Yeah, that looks pretty above board. I feel like on an iOS device you could theoretically cover your tracks pretty well, even if the device is managed.

Not that I'd ever recommend using a managed device to do that. Especially if the company managing the device, y'know, made said device.

ME: I guess maybe this is to reduce accidental key entry from replicating a physical pattern?

CASHIER: It's random.

Here’s the thing, when the DoJ goes after companies for things other than monopolies, it can often win. Apple did break the law when it tried to do price fixing for ebooks. It straight up did that. It also colluded with other big tech companies to depress salaries. Those settlements made sense b/c like, yeah, those laws were clearly broken. But without seeing the full docs, being mad that Apple has private APIs it hoarded for itself is such a weird thing to spend 5 years investigating.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@film_girl The idea of Apple giving itself private APIs that only they get to use reminds me a lot about the antitrust case against MSFT in the 90s which I think they did lose.

Apple has long been doing stuff that goes even further than what MSFT did back then but the prevailing wisdom has been that since Apple makes the whole platform and hardware then it's theirs to do that with. But having a market cap in the trillions I have to think that changes things a bit.

I gotta figure out how to organize my office. It's hard because some asshole filled it with guitars and recording equipment.

harpaa01,
@harpaa01@mastodon.social avatar

@collin My toxic trait is my undying belief that I can fix my clutter by buying more stuff, and it's in that spirit that I'm a big fan of Sidio's crates:

https://icanthascheezburger.com/wordpress/2024/01/review-sidio-crates-a-thumbs-up-thats-less-begrudging-than-it-seems/

(also, having less stuff in your office might help, i guess, but where’s the fun in that?)
