Congratulating myself for doing a Smart Thing when buying an Optoma projector with lower rez, but powerful light and high contrast some 14 years ago.

Useful for party visuals, created with some 1930s cartoons from Archive.org and a free trial of synesthesia VJ software 😅

Wonky 1930s ”rubber arm” animations go with basically any music.

Olen sanonut tämän ennenkin, mutta tulevaisuudessa taustatöitä tekevät kollegani palaavat vanhoihin käytänteisiin: ottavat yhteyttä suoraan substanssiosaajiin ja käyvät paljon enemmän kirjastossa plaraamassa erinäisiä hakuteoksia ja kyselevät taas enemmän toisiltaan. Pitäisiköhän minun aktivoitua Kontekstissa ja Translatissa? Olen toki tilannut niitä kaikki mämä vuodet, ja kaikki kääntäjien viestit ovat tallessa Gmailissa. Yksi syy siihen, etten tule koskaan kokonaan luopumaan Gmailista: hakutoiminnon päässä on ainakin parinkymmenen vuoden kysymykset ja vastaukset. Se saattaa olla jossain vaiheessa arvokkaampi kuin G:n varsinainen hakukone.

Hakukoneiden kulta-aika tulee olemaan kirjallisuuden kääntämisen pitkässä historiassa silmänräpäys, pelkkä mitätön blip, joka jonain kauniina päivänä kuulostaa täysin järjettömältä – riitti kun kirjoitti hakukentään hyvin muotoillun loitsun niin vastaus oli siinä. Se oli melkein kuin taikuutta. Voi voi, voi voi.

@personamatters @jussi_og @antti Eräs probleema esim pienen palvelun hostaaman meililaatikon kanssa on se, että se voi jostain salaperäisistä syistä päätyä jollekin mustalle listalle, jolloin postit eivät enää kulje. Näin kävi firman meileille. Siirto Microsoftille auttoi 🙄

Miele appreciation post:
I thought our over 15 year old washing machine had broken down, as it would get stuck on the final emptying phase. Cleaning the pump didn’t help. Was going to call the first repair ever for the machine, but had not gotten around to it.

Well, now I cleaned the drain a few months later and turns out it was blocked with gunk, which triggered some safety threshold in the pump. So instead of being broken, it was working as designed!

@artcollisions It is a wonderful machine! The pump is easily cleaned and designed in such a way that it is very unlikely that it would be damaged by stray objects. Picked a wooden stick and a coin from the pump chamber previously.

@artcollisions Miele Novotronic W 506. Six buttons and a mechanical dial, indicator lights but no screen. Our dishwasher is Miele as well, but only like two years old. Fairly expensive, but I think the longevity might make up for it! The dishwasher automatically nags about filter cleaning.

@piiabartos Onko kulma optimaalinen? Meillä mökin paneelit vähän turhan pystyssä kesän kannalta, mutta olen tullut siihen, että ei haittaa, koska se on ideaali syksyllä kun riittävyys on isompi haaste.
(Säädettävä kulma olisi tietty jotain, mutta tuli vahingossa askarreltua liian pysty teline, eikä huvita sen rakentaminen uusiksi).

This is a bit wonky, but very good in giving you some idea of which things matter with regards to climate emissions and which don’t make all that much of a difference.

Phones should have a language-agnostic input option where you get to choose supported character sets. It could be combined with a multi-lingual spell check that learns the languages you type in.

I don’t necessarily want to switch to the Icelandic keyboard to type an occasional place name correctly.

Did you know Finland is a world leader in children´s independent mobility?
The differences are fairly striking. Independent mobility has gone down everywhere, but less dramatically in Finland than other places.

I'm greatly enjoying the latest version of the Old Maps Online website. It has a very smooth time scrubber where you can see political borders change through time, and then browse georeferenced historical maps from map libraries like the David Rumsey collection.

Beware the fake Minard! Funny and also serves as a note of caution.

Was looking for a portrait of Charles Joseph Minard and found the leftmost picture.
It gives a source, a blog featuring the same image, but no further attribution.
I was suspicious since Rendgren's definitive Minard book has no portrait.

Quick reverse image search turns up Charles, Baron Dupin in the Wellcome collection.
So somehow he got turned into Minard, based on his first name?

Google is geared to generating this sort of misunderstandings. Here it isn’t the fake Minard, but an actual Minard-related portrait, for some reason lifted to illustrate the Wikipedia snippet. Maybe the system recognizing that this is about a person and picking the only pic of a person in the article?

If you read it the image caption explains that this is "Eugène Rouher painted by Alexandre Cabanel, ca. 1861. A map by Charles Joseph Minard is draped over the chair in the background."

So, Danish illustrator and graphic designer Preben Dahlstrøm, a true master of the illustrated field guide in the 1970s: I’m trying to find some biographical information on him – but I have nothing more than that he might have been born in Odense in 1917 and died in the 1990s.

Anyone with access to older Danish newspapers? Maybe there was an obituary?
