Good time to re-reboost this post, which hugely improved my small-instance mastodon experience. And @michael has made FediFetcher a lot better since then too.

Look, I finally caved. I had a networking scenario that was super easy to resolve using Tailscale that was a pain in the ass otherwise, and I finally got myself an account. It is a wonderful tool and as good as everyone said. I’m now starting the inevitable “broken-by-success” stopwatch and keep an eye out for things to switch to when that happens.

mattlehrer,

@janl @cjk here it is. I haven’t tried it (I do use Tailscale and like it too). https://github.com/juanfont/headscale

It's Friday afternoon. I have 3 weeks annual leave coming up. I've been working on something that's a massive quality of life improvement to our sales team.

Do I trust my tests enough to release it today? 🤔

What would you do?

mattlehrer,

@michael lol what did you do

what’s the name for that feeling when a SaaS product has a delayed workflow that takes such an inconsistent and unpredictable amount of time that you suspect the automation is fake and a human is behind the scenes configuring things manually

mattlehrer,

@zachleat maybe Aardvarking. Technically, Wizard of Oz but Aardvark was the most successful for longest running one I’ve heard about. https://www.deaneckles.com/blog/305_aardvarks-use-of-wizard-of-oz-prototyping-to-design-their-social-interfaces/

Is there an RSS reader that lets me see my friends feeds? Say I have 3 friends, I can see their feed/subs and they can see mine. Added bonus if I can star something which produces a subscribeable feed for others.

mattlehrer,

@argyleink Dave Winer’s new project Feedland does this though it seems kinda early / needs design love https://docs.feedland.com/yourfeedlist.md

mattlehrer,

@argyleink oof. I think you can self host or he has tooted that that is a goal at least. The concept is interesting but I am only loosely following along. I want it to work.

mattlehrer,

@argyleink I see his profile @davew has a link to the roadmap and the first handful of bullets confirm that. Now I want to read more too… http://roadmap.feedland.org/

mattlehrer,

@kushal I do. It’s snappy but I wish it had native cursor movement.

Legit question:

Are you paying (either monthly or one off) for your browser (polypane, sizzle, etc)?

mattlehrer,

@Kilian @andy FWIW I did not buy because of ROI. there’s no way to figure out how much time it saves. Polypane helps me find issues I wouldn’t have known about and it makes it a pleasure to do it. It also saves time on resizing the browser window…
And I just read @asmartbear ‘s post on ROI and think it would help your thinking on this https://longform.asmartbear.com/roi-selling/

An important milestone for @bookwyrm: migration across instances just shipped. Congrats and thanks to @csddumi, @tripofmice and the rest of the contributors.

Still doing ! The number of words learned feels quite low. I need to do a lot more.

This is a bit of a long shot, but if there are any developers out there interested in mapping who would be willing to spend a bit of time helping a novice (me) out in some experiments to improve UX in web apps for sustainable transport planning, please get in touch.

mattlehrer,

@robinlovelace I’m happy to help and liked working with leaflet and openstreetmaps data in svelte. I don’t recognize the tiles in the screenshot though. What are you working on/with and what do you want help with?

mattlehrer,

@phoopee3 @robinlovelace it’s checking for the existence of both e.detail and e.detail.center with “optional chaining” https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Operators/Optional_chaining

this post was very useful today for debugging a JS-initiated hover state not working https://remysharp.com/2021/07/09/how-to-inspect-elements-that-hide-on-mouse-move

    mattlehrer,

@geoffrich I read this old post that has a different way earlier today and I don’t know which method is more ridiculous https://alan.norbauer.com/articles/browser-debugging-tricks#inspect-an-elusive-element

    mattlehrer,

@sophie I wonder if we could just edit the url in the post and add a query param to make it refetch

So, I've been playing with Kagi search this week, and I do quite like it:

    http://kagi.com

I've been seriously fed up with Google's search recently: results full of ads and/or SEO spam, to the point that it's hard to find info.

The results in kagi search are overall good (though the map is really lacking), but it's just very expensive. I'd definitely need their $10 per month plan, and I'm not sure I could justify this, given there is free (though arguably worse) competition. 🤔

I guess I could cycle through the trial by creating a new account every week (the joys of having my own domain name) but that seems a little ridiculous, too 😆

    #search #SearchEngines #SearchEngineOptimization
    #web #kagi #google

    mattlehrer,

@michael I have been using it for a while and they are probably still figuring out their pricing. They have made a couple changes since I joined, both towards more searches allowed or lower cost. I like it a lot but still use Google maps.
If you haven’t adjusted your personalized results yet, start at the domain leaderboard https://kagi.com/stats?stat=leaderboard

    mattlehrer,

@michael yes, the thing that feels very difficult to overcome is the reviews, which I use a lot. (And I think was bootstrapped by ripping off Yelp? Not sure if that’s what they ripped Yelp off for.)

    mattlehrer,

@michael definitely a high priority for businesses to make sure they show up there.
